Fake traffic officer caught running illegal checkpoint

Featured Replies

One of five men suspected of disguising themselves as traffic police officers to extort money from motorists was arrested on Tuesday night while manning a fake checkpoint and after stealing a man’s phone. Veng Chea, a police officer in Por Senchey district, identified the suspect as Chhin Sovann, 36, a construction worker from Por Senchey district’s Chom Chao 3 commune.

Mr Chea said that on Tuesday night at about 11pm, the suspect and four of his friends disguised themselves as policemen and set up an illegal police rcheckpoint to inspect cars and motorcycles in Chom Chao 2 commune. He said that while inspecting cars and motorbike drivers, the suspects seized a motorbike, phone and $329 from garment worker Ros Sary, 25.

After the suspects seized his phone and money, the victim grew suspicious of the policemen and went to meet with Por Senchey district police officers, where he complained of the encounter. A team of district police officers then visited the illegal checkpoint, nabbing one of the five men posing as traffic policemen.
