Phanthit Mahapaoraya

The South Bangkok Criminal Court released a stepson of former finance minister Korn Chatikavanij on bail on Friday, a day after he was arrested in a taxi with a small amount of cocaine.

The court approved a temporary release of Phanthit Mahapaoraya, 27, after he placed Bt10,000 as a guarantee.

The court ordered him to report to the court on June 21.

Phanthit was arrested at 4am on Thursday by Thonglor police at a checkpoint at Ocean Tower 1 on Ratchadaphisek Road in Bangkok’s Khlong Toey district.

Police said they found a small zip-lock bag containing 0.9 grams of cocaine in his trouser pocket.

Phanthit admitted to Thonglor police that he bought the drug from a friend, who he is not close to, at a restaurant in Ratchadamri and took some of the drugs in the toilet. He allegedly said he planned to take the rest at home.

Police said they had yet to interrogate four more witnesses and wait for a lab test to confirm the quality of the drug.

He was charged with having cocaine, which carries a jail term of up to five years and a fine of Bt50,000 if there is less than 100 grams.

Will he get the same teatment and harsh punishment like Yooyee or will he get the "VIP"treatment like the "Boss" Vorayuth?

Get your facts straight before you attempt thai bashing, or , get a life not revolving around such trivia .

Bail is a privilige of rank. If truth be known all these hi-sos, or at least their offspring, are into cocaine, and gambling, and god knows what else. Now if he'd been caught with yaba, or in some lo-so card game, that would be shocking.

I am just trying to help you be a better person.

Another rich and easy victim to get busted....just to extort money from his family....and in the meantime the hard core crooks and wholesale drug dealers are free to practice their trade, perhaps with "holy golden-wing protection" ?!

And when they find the results of the quality of the drug?

Worth a second thought:

Criminalization of drug use and possession has had almost no impact on actual levels of drug use. However, the criminalizing of drugs does practically ensure a cycle of criminality and greater prison sentences. At this point, it’s evident that the War on Drugs is a frantic grasp for control in a broken system.

I would put my money at 20 to 1 that he  gets the VIP treatment. A proper bookie in The UK would have about five different out comes for different odds.

Odd that they searched passengers in the taxi too. You have no rights in Thailand. And why than less than a gram is even brought into the spot light is just moronic.

Why is that odd? If it's a spot check, they can check pretty much what/who they want to - same as in most (all?) countries.

Because he is a normal guy in a taxi. A paying passenger. And no, this does not happen in most all countries to the paying taxi customer. Private vehicles yes.

So ,were you to be caught with the same amount of cocaine in your home country would you not be arrested ? Where do you know that cocaine of less then an ounce is legal?

It was less than a gram which is 1/28th of an ounce, and there are countries where possessing that amount is legal or decriminalised - Switzerland,  Germany, Portugal, Netherlands, Peru, Colombia, Brazil and Bolivia. More still where it is essentially decriminalised in practice.

Police are not going to yank you out of a taxi in any other country and search you. Even Singapore or Indonesia is not going to do that. Less than a gram is irrelevant.

Where did you get this strange concept that taxi passengers have either more rights or immunity from police action than other citizens?

You are lost. Only here is it invasion of privacy as citizens and us have no rights. In any normal country the passenger is neutral and is never approached.
