The Work Permit becomes invalid once it expires. It is not based on the status of your visa. However, if one gets an extension of stay based on work that extension becomes invalid when the work permit is cancelled or expires. But the OP should be aware that the WP is not a substitute for a visa or permission to stay so when his visa expires he needs to get an extension or leave the country.
