BANGKOK — Police chief Pol. Gen. Chakthip Chaijinda warned Friday that anti-coup protesters would risk being prosecuted if they join a coup anniversary demonstration later this month.

The police chief said he doesn’t want to see protesters marching on May 22, the fourth anniversary of the military coup.

A protest leader said such threats would not deter protesters from coming out as they are no longer afraid of the military regime.

"... he doesn't want to see the protesters marching..."

Why is 'what he wants to see' relevant at all?  Do his desires form the basis of human rights in Thailand? Do his wishes constitute what is legal or illegal? And does 'what he wants to see' matter in the slightest in advance of any action?

What arrogant man!

I salute the brave protesters and wish them the best.

As for the Junta/police/Prayut, it is becoming more and more clear everyday that they are afraid, losing support, and desperate to hang on to power. My only worry is that scared, stupid people do scared stupid things.

Hey Prayut/police/military/NCPO!

Both the Thai people and the world are watching; ignore their eyes at your own peril...

That's fighting talk Rangsiman

Mass public unrest will be the end of the Junta, they are now powerless to stop these protests.

And during Shutdown Bangkok led by  Suthep the army stood and watched and did nothing to help.

A few students protest  about what is happening now they are on them like fleas on a dog.

As said, let's hope this is like a red rag to a bull and thousands turn out to protest.

Agree. But it needs to be tens of thousands and preferably MILLIONS on the streets against this junta. That is the only thing that will stand a chance of kicking this democracy-smashing scum out of their stolen power   ...

Tick tick tick tick. Arrogant b-turd

good on the protesters, you get the feeling that time is on people's side and more dinosaurs will pass this earth. Very few people want to be shot or lives destroyed.when sooner or later the protesters will grow far larger and be uncontrollable for these unelected persons.making naff decisions and lining their pockets with trillions of baht contracts from railways,4g,5g, etc

  • Popular Post

If nothing else this police threat should give the international press something to write about to let to let the world know how the current unelected government control freedom of expression and the people's attempts to obtain democracy. It is also a reminder to all that it is the fourth year that Thailand has been without a democracy thanks to the incompetent heel draggers currently in power.

Keep up the good PR work Police General Chakthip Chaijinda. Those outside like to be aware of how the Royal Thai Police are among those doing the junta's dirty work by trampling on people's human rights and freedoms of expression rather than fighting crime which is what they are supposed to be doing.

They are strong only while you are weak. You are weak only as long as you do not stand up as WE

What a brilliant post and quotation (above)! How true that is. The junta are doing everything possible to leave the Thais no way out other than mass non-compliance and mass resistance. If the s... hits the fan, the junta have only themselves to blame.

In some more fiery and gutsy cultures, the chief freedom-smashing 'generals' here would already be hanging from street lamp-posts ...

Students have made all the changes in Thai, the people followed, Students and academic's have pulling power, the Junta right from the start has been afraid of students and now with social media things can be planned and surprises can happen...…………………………..:coffee1:

I agree with you, Chainarong. I would say, though, that it is more the students than their lecturers who display real courage. Usually the Thai university lecturers just go along with autocracy (they don't want to lose their jobs). They are noway role-models of guts and principle.

I know one top university lecturer very well (I won't mention his name or university - but it is very, very high in Thailand) who was famous during the Thaksin era and was all over the media for speaking out against Thaksin's 'undemocratic' way of behaving. But what has that same lecturer now said against the much worse (in terms of non-democracy) junta?

NOTHING! Not a word, not a peep. He is going along with it all. Pathetic.

Such people's principles are only principles as long as the side they approve of gets into power. Then all their 'principles' are thrown out of the window.

“Today, if we don’t do anything, we will have to be stuck with [junta leader] Prayuth [Chan-ocha] longer… I don’t see any future. I believe the people are no longer afraid of the National Council for Peace and Order,”

That is going to hurt some feelings, but he is right.  Prayuth sense of authority comes from his illusions or a make believe friend, not the people of Thailand.  Hope the young man does not get abducted and then disappear.  He is challenging people that do not know how to express themselves with anything other than threats of violence and bullying.

We all know what you are talking about . I was simply pointing out  the support the military and police showed for Shutdown Bangkok,by not getting involved.. But when it comes to them it is no way can you demonstrate.

History shows the students have in the past had very much influence and probably will have again. Time will tell huh.

Thai's are like Grouche Marx.

His famous statement for me was "I have principles and if you do not like these ones I have others" Or something like that.

They need millions on the streets!

A pointless protest for a November general election. Only bringing it forward by 3 months. Why don't these students join a political party and start canvasing for votes instead.

Look to the recent general election in Malaysia for inspiration. Protests will only give the current government an excuse to delay the next election anyway.

Good for the protesters or should I say for those who are concerned for democracy, culture, civil liberty, human rights plus freedom of speech.

I wish them well...
