The local embassy requires a departure ticket out of Thailand when applying for non-imm O visa 90 days (which will be extended for retirement at end of 90 days).  Is it acceptable to buy a cheap "throwaway" ticket to Malaysia or Cambodia for the end of the 90 days, or do you have to be a full fare return to the point of origin( which is very expensive)

A return ticket is not required. You can use a onward ticket to anywhere to meet the requirement.
