TAT to launch Amazing Thai Taste festival

Tanakorn Sangiam

BANGKOK, 1 June 2018 (NNT) – The Tourism Authority of Thailand will organize Amazing Thai Taste festival to promote Thai food to the world.

Deputy Tourism Authority of Thailand's (TAT) Governor Sujitra Jongchansitto revealed the agency has joined hands with CU Property and 37 other agencies to hold the Amazing Thai Taste festival at Siam Square during 8-10 June 2018.

The event will be held with the concept of Eat Thai Food And Feel Good, promoting the country's diverse gastronomic qualities.

Local food from five regions of Thailand, and street food from Bangkok, will be featured with 134 foodshops in eight zones. The event will also feature cooking workshops from chefs, as well as concerts from famous artists.

Some 80,000 people are expected to attend the event, circulating some 40 million baht in revenue.

Amazing Thai Taste festival will take place during 8-10 June 2018 at Siam Square, Bangkok, from 12.00 p.m. until 08.00 p.m.

Let me see if I have this right. TAT are going to try and attract new tourists to Thailand by putting on a show of eating chillies.

In Siam Square.

That'll bring new tourists flooding in right enough. What could go wrong?

I wonder if that "famous" sausage vendor, the one caught recently peeing beside his food cart, will also feature at the "Amazing Thai Taste" event? That would be fun...

Think he will be competing in the "Marinade' competition.

Wouldn't it just? "Would you like some bottled urine with that? I've just made up a fresh batch... aloy mak".

I've never understood what people like about Thai food. I've only been to 3 Thai restaurants in UK and a few in Bangkok, but to me, the food generally tastes like cardboard, and is like having a blowtorch shoved down your throat. The nutrional value must be about the same as eating grass. Yet people rave about it - it's a complete mystery to me, I'd rather eat Indian or Chinese ten times out of ten. I'd forgo any chance of being considered trendy of course, but at least I'd enjoy the feed.

If I wanted to eat primitive ethnic, I'd go to Peru and eat some nice Yak poo.

Taste is a relative term. Taste for food? Taste of corruption? Taste of This is Thailand? Taste of tuk tuk mafias? Taste of what? ?

If each person is spending 500 baht, that's some pretty pricey somtam.

I now realise it's for last year.  Mea culpa.  So, nothing that I can see on the Amazing Thailand Facebook about this year's Amazing Thai Taste Festival.

Should be hosting it outside Thailand, not inside.

Back in the noughties eg 2003 etc, that is actually what TAT did, with several Thai food festivals in Europe etc.

I think TAT might do a better job if they actually communicated with potential tourists.Because it is very difficult to find information about events in Thailand even when you are there.Over the years, I have sent many e mails to the TAT offices (both in Thailand and abroad) asking for dates of specific festivals etc. I have even had some of them translated into Thai.

Not one single reply.

Contact most other countries tourist boards and you usually get a swift, comprehensive reply together with glossy brochures.

As an example, I have for many years tried to plan a trip around the Buffalo races in Chonburi, the only time you can find out when it is on in advance is by deep searching on the internet, ask TAT, nothing!

Come on TAT, do the job you are (well)paid to do.

I think you've got your wires crossed mate. There are no yaks in Peru, they are found in areas of the Himalayas such as Tibet and Nepal.

Now if you still want to eat poo, the llamas do a good number. Perhaps you were thinking of the Dalai Lama who hails from Tibet.

Thank you sir, most kind.

Been in Thailand too long.

I hadn't noticed my brains leaking out of my ears. Kinda snuck up on me.

I do not understand those who rant on the TAT..? Their website seems to give a lood layout of the country and the upcomming events ??

https://www.tourismthailand.org/Events-and-Festivals

But I do agree however, that many administrations now tend to send you bugging off when you directly write to them or ask them something on the phone - they just ask you to buzz off and see the website.

Some Thai consulates/embassies are champions in this attitude in Europe,  when you cannot find some information. They either just ask you to buzz off and check their website or to check it with immigration when you are in Thailand !!!!  No amount of being sweety-sweety or even bootlicking helps, as many just don't care in their cushy consulate postings in Europe...or sometimes just don't kow !

It's completely unreliable.  A few years ago I booked a short holiday in Uthai Thani based upon the website description.  The botanical gardens TAT described were non-existent.  (At least, nobody at the 5* hotel I was staying in had ever heard of them, and I couldn't locate them on Google Maps.)  And the Khmer-era ruins, which TAT likened to Phanom Rung were no more than a brick or two high in a muddy field which was fenced off and so inaccessible.
