PHUKET: Pickup trucks and even songthaew buses fully loaded with drums of fuel being pumped into speedboats at Rawai Beach will cease this coming week as the Phuket office of the Ministry of Energy starts enforcing public safety laws banning the dangerous practice.

After being informed of the beachfront refuelling by The Phuket News three weeks ago, Rawai Mayor Aroon Solos at first said that he was aware of the practice, especially as Rawai Beach is literally right out the front door of the Rawai Municipality offices.

But only this past week did Mayor Aroon concede that it was dangerous and that he had instructed his officers to take steps to ensure the beach refuelling stops.

But he's about to pull out a lighter to see how much fuel is left in the drum.

Nope...fully protected! Red Bull.

Today I saw 2 big fuel trucks  at that place at the same time , with pipes on the beach , why the speedboat are allowed to come on the beach ? why not use and build a light harbor at the end of the jetty with gasoline pump?  .This would allow a rehabilitation of Rawai beach with less pollution and less risks of accident. Tourist will be happy to have a beach which could be beautiful.

That is nothing compared to Pattaya where there are numerous plastic petrol containers along the beach walk where people are smoking, none approved for petrol storage. These are transported to the beach on pickups, several hundred liters a load. I'm sure this mode of transportation of petrol is illegal. If any of these pickups have an accident it could result in a fire ball killing a lot of people.

All this is going on just in front of the soi 9 police station.

He'll refuel the boats just fine, then, hop into the pick-up and speed off down the road, have an accident, and kill someone.

Go figure.
