PM: Military satellite procurement still up in the air

BANGKOK, 7th June 2018 (NNT) – The Prime Minister has confirmed that any and all projects of the government first require Cabinet approval, including the procurement of a new military satellite which is still in the conceptual stage.

In his response to criticism of the idea of procuring a new satellite for military use, Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-o-cha explained that the matter was merely brought up during a recent discussions to assess whether or not it should be pursued. He personally believes the idea requires much more time and consideration of several factors, to materialize.

In this regard, the premier was adamant the matter has not been tabled by the Cabinet. For any state project to become feasible, he said it would need Cabinet approval as well as a green light from an earlier examination in regard to its compliance with the law, in addition to hearings in a public forum.

Nevertheless, the Prime Minister suggested the people take into account both risks and opportunities that come with today’s fast-changing technology before passing judgment. He also urged all social media users to avoid creating conflicts in society by thinking carefully before sharing information which might be inaccurate or distorted.

With the satellites, they’ll be able to take high definition aerial shots of overcrowded and underfunded hospitals in Thailand

Thats the funniest thing he has ever said.

"....still in the conceptual stage"

Which means it is at least 30 years away. Just like the HS trains are in the conceptual stage and education and RTP reforms are in the conceptual stage. The phrase "still in the conceptual stage " in Pinocchio speak for "we are still dreaming about it".

This is bad!!!

How the hell can they be expected to improve education, healthcare, pollution, people trafficking, and slave labour without a military satellite system?

So a military satellite is only going to be used to map natural resources? Think they should change the name, then all good to go.

They don't need a satellite for that...

He's not hiding, he's travelling around the region, having a laugh at the Juntas expense ?

They can find him via Facebook as usual...

Hardly a requirement.  More like a walk in the park.

Starting with this one.

It will also allow looking into all those classrooms, where Thailands future generation is de-educated in order to generate all that tax money needed to pay those piling debts so professionally incurred by the army. Once they've paid for their (own) education there are pending items like three submarines and, since the colour is so nice, this satellite - possibly to be called "purple star" by the colour of the solar panels.

Quite obviously nobody around to check balances - not necessary, as there are no conflicts of interest around anyhow .......

So, it's a done deal then since it's his cabinet and considering the tiny fact that he wrote the law.  Any public hearings would be merely a smokescreen... as usual.

If anyone has tried to import 'high tech' items during the past couple of years, like I have (a toy-/hobby-grade drone and a harmless consumer-grade 3D printer) you would know, like I do, that his ultra-paranoia of any and all "fast-changing technology" has swept through the Thai government like a tsunami since 2014.  Attempting to import such 'dangerous' items is an absolute nightmare.  You're better off 'tilting at windmills' as it's clearly a fool's errand.  Of course, if you want to pay 2X the price you can often find the same or similar items already for sale in Thailand on Lazada.  It's really screwed up folks but certainly typical behavior of a dictator [wannabe?].

Another boondoggle in the works.

There will be a few years of wrangling in committees that have been compromised by pay-outs from the principle players.

Put an end to it now.

Isn't anything ever learned from past mistakes?

The satellites will be used to track the submarines.

You might use that 3D  printer to print up a secret cache of redshirt weapons. Eternal vigilance

You maybe able to see the hands on a dead mans watch from 90 miles up with this procurement.

If the government's aim is to create better national security and enhance the wellbeing, safety and liberty of Thailand's residents and visitors, then the answer to your question is NO.

If, however, the aim is to create an income stream which can be siphoned off at various points, increase the power and prestige of the army and its associates, and bolster the egos of those in charge of it, then the question does not make sense. These are not mistakes. THey are a rational and probably successful way of achieving those ends.

Hahahahahahahaha!  Like I've been telling people for nearly a year...  Yeah, I can indeed 3D print little plastic bullets to go into little 3D printed plastic guns to shoot little 3D printed plastic toy [junta?] soldiers.  But hey, at least the plastic filament I use is biodegradable.?

Oh, thanks tomta, you just reminded me... It's June already so I must (it's mandatory) report/update the disposition of this 'dangerous' 3D printer to the Thai Ministry of Commerce.  I must do this twice a year since it's officially listed as a Restricted Item.  You can't make this stuff up folks.

"Eternal vigilance" Hahahaha!  Do you by chance work for the Thai government tomta?  Let's see, I can:

  • run over people with my car and/or motorcycle, or even my mountain bike
  • beat someone to death with my carpenter's hammer or pizza dough rolling pin
  • strangle someone with my belt, towel, bed pillow, or tablecloth
  • stab someone with a kitchen knife or fork, or screwdriver, or chopstick or ???
  • boil water with either my gas stove, or my microwave oven, and severely  burn someone
  • blind, or temporarily blind someone with an aerosol can of just about anything
  • add too much Thai chili peppers to a dinner entree to severely burn someone's mouth
  • etc. etc. etc. ad nauseam

So should all those devices be banned or listed on the Thai governments "Restricted Item" list?  Food for thought anyway.

Standard of course. How's Thailand 4 traveling

PM: Military satellite procurement still up in the air

What's really up in the air is the latest kite the junta is so obviously flying.

It's one of the oldest tricks in the politicians' book: to leak news of a controversial proposal, rather than just bulldoze it through and risk a backlash - particularly with an election just around the corner.

No matter what the reason offered may be the military will find a way to use it against the general population in order to line the pockets of those who are in positions of authority.

I hope they rent satellites with "frickin' laser beams" onboard.

It'll be smiles all round, they'll get a 10% discount and buy the Betamax version.

Said satellites could be a great tool for tracking the movement of all farangs, not just the criminal ones but well meaning, well behaved farangs too. Visual, electronic, the whole 9 yards.
