Stolen in Bangkok - found in Ho Chi Minh - woman's iPhone woes continue

 

 

A woman who went online in an appeal to get her iPhone back after it was stolen from her at a Lat Prao department store now has to face the fact of never seeing it again. 

 

She went online again yesterday to show tracking technology on another phone that showed her device was now in Ho Chi Minh city in Vietnam.

 

Shortly after the signal went dead, reported Sanook. 

 

The phone was taken from a bag that was slashed - she was just left with the charger as a painful memory.

 

She had lost a lot of phone numbers of her celebrity associates. 

 

Earlier in the week crime buster Maj Gen Surachet "Big Joke" Hakpal warned that pickpockets and other thieves were "flying in from Burma and Vietnam" to thieve at weekends in shopping areas like Pratunam in Bangkok.

 

As soon as they have a dozen or so phones they fly back and dispose of the devices in their own countries.

At best, one can always neutralise an iPhone by distance in case of theft and erase all sensitive data. Won't give the phone back, but would be useless for the thief.

Whoever loses his/her phone numbers/contacts with a phone deserves this. It is easy peasy to maintain (automagically) a backup, why someone does not do it, escapes my mind. I guess it is even supported by iPhones, but you never know...

Just too lazy to think past the next 5 minutes.

 

reinforced by standard thinking that longer term & taking simple actions to prevent problems and losses etc is too serious.

 

 

This happens all over Europe and it is mainly ‘non locals’ doing it there too.

 

Although, in PC Europe you could not put up those signs stating ‘Non Thai pickpockets’

Why no companion sign 'BEWARE THAI PICKPOCKET GANGS'.

 

Possibly overall more danger of being pick pocketed (any such term?) by a Thai rather than non-Thai, such thieves, Thai, can be found in many locations, been happening for decades.

 

Plus 20+ years back a farang who lived in my apartment building in Bkk was caught stealing ladies purses in Central Chidlom. He was fined and instantly deported.

Those signs if they are for real are absolutely typical of the “Thai good, farang bad” mentality pervasive in Thailand.  It is a nasty and pathetic slur on this country. If only Thais could get a grip and see themselves.

I do not believe that there is no way to use a stolen iphone, or even stupid robbers would not steal them anymore.
