Govt, private sector to buy more rice from farmers

BANGKOK, 19th June 2018 (NNT) - The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives and Tesco Lotus have continued their cooperation in buying 9,000 tons of rice from agricultural cooperatives in four northeastern provinces. The rice deal is expected to boost incomes for more than 140,000 farmers. 

The minister on Monday presided over the opening ceremony of a project to directly buy fragrant jasmine rice from agricultural cooperatives in Ubon Ratchathani, Surin, Roi Et and Si Sa Ket. The rice will be packaged and sold under the Tesco Lotus brand. 

More than 5,700 tons of fragrant jasmine rice were previously bought by the ministry. 

The ministry plans to form 6,000 groups of large agricultural land plots this year to reduce the costs of production. Produce from them will be sold to the business sector directly. 

More than 1,600 companies are expected to participate in the project this year. 

The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives and the Ministry of Commerce will work together to form committees responsible for each type of agricultural product to learn about the real needs of farmers and plan production based on the market.

 The farmer will get squat all. The profits got to the middle man and the rice miller and corruption officials pockets.

9000 tons from 140000 farmers is 64 kg's from each farmer.

Nope, you are not missing anything, more than you have to take into consideration, that this is from start Thai news for the Thai population. We all know that the possibility to count and calculate is not as widespread in that area as it is for us. They still believe the news.

And at the same time they will buy 9,000 tons of rice LESS from all other provinces, or the supermarkets will be full of bags of rice.

As "The Ministry of Agriculture and Cooperatives and Tesco Lotus have continued their cooperation in buying 9,000 tons of rice from agricultural cooperative," it appears that only the rice miller will be in the middle to process the rice and the ministry as the distributor/wholesaler and Tesco as the retailer. I'd expect the ministry not to charge (assuming no corruption!) any markup that otherwise would go to the distributor/wholesaler. So the cooperative should make more profit for its farmers.

On the other hand, no interceding rice prices are mentioned.

This arrangement works for domestic sales. It won't work for foreign sales.
