A Thai man has been caught red-handed by lifeguards for stealing a foreigner’s bag containing cash, a mobile phone and wallet at Karon Beach yesterday (June 27) .

The victim of the theft has only identified as a female foreign tourist who was enjoying her day on Karon beach opposite the Tourist Assistance Centre yesterday afternoon.

According to the Karon Police report, the suspect is 24 year old Nattapon Chaichana from Songkhla.

How many times a day does something like this happen in the Kingdom?

Anything different about this particular  event that caused it's reporting on TVF?

I wonder how many cars or trucks are stolen each day or how many shoplifters are caught.    Muggings?

Just curious.

There are some statistics here but I doubt they are very reliable: https://knoema.com/atlas/Thailand/topics/Crime-Statistics

Some more here maybe a little better: http://www.nationmaster.com/country-info/profiles/Thailand/Crime

The big problem is that there is one set of stats. for crimes involving locals and another for those involving foreigners, all sources I read suggest the former is quite high and the latter very low and that would seem to stack up against anecdotal evidence and my perception at least. I KNOW, other may well see things differently, based on where they live and what they read, Sun readers will no doubt have tourists being murdered at the rate of ten per hour!
