BRUSSELS (Reuters) - European Union leaders reached an agreement on migration after almost 10 hours of chaotic talks in Brussels over the sensitive issue threatening their union and zone of free travel, as well as German Chancellor Angela Merkel's government.

"EU28 leaders have agreed on (summit) conclusions, including on migration," the chairman of the talks, Donald Tusk, said.

Italy has earlier blocked any agreement at the summit - which was also about trade and security, among other things - unless EU peers meet its demands over migration.

No they haven't

What they have agreed on is the common language of migration.

Quote

German Chancellor Angela Merkel said it was a good sign that EU leaders had been able to agree common language on migration at a summit on Friday, but acknowledged that deep divisions remained among member states.

They haven't even started on a plan of action for tackling migration yet ??

Merkal hangs on a bit longer

Reuters being somewhat economical with the truth, again!

All they've agreed is common language and that there is no agreement. Not even close to one.

"The European Council is determined... to prevent a return to the uncontrolled flows of 2015 and to further stem illegal migration on all existing and emerging routes."

That seems to be a direct criticism of Mrs Merkel's open door policy?

"On EU territory, those who are saved, according to international law, should be taken charge of, on the basis of a shared effort, through the transfer in controlled centres set up in Member States, only on a voluntary basis, "

So no mandatory quotas as demanded by Mrs. Merkel then?

Not been a good week for her.

Not a good week due to the spoiling activities by Visegrad members and a few others. The ball is slowing starting to move in the right direction, hopefully will get more momentum in the coming months as additional funding and resources are agreed by cooperating countries.

I think the spoiling occurred when she decided unilaterally to open Germany's borders and then when it all went wrong try and force others into accepting a solution she found politically acceptable.

The right direction - process those who have arrived quickly and deport those who are simple economic migrants, tighter external EU borders, and work to prevent and discourage people from making illegal attempts through traffickers. Sounds good idea.

Looks to me like the whole free world is leaning to the right more and more. I like it. PC be damned.

Probably the most savvy politician in the world.

Trump could learn a lot from her.

Actually he could learn a lot but is only interested in his ego and self enrichment

If being a savvy politician is wrecking Europe, I am hoping Trump learns nothing from her.  US past presidents have wrecked the USA in not dealing with the illegal immigration. Let's hope Trump can curb the wrecking ball just a little.
