Penang, couple of questions

Featured Replies

I need to get a new non-B visa, so will travel to Penang. Drive to the Padang Besar border, then onwards by train. I have a few questions, so anyone know the answers that would be great!

1) Is the list of required docs for a single entry non B visa on the Malay embassy website complete?  http://www.thaiembassy.org/kualalumpur/contents/files/services-20170329-105635-807825.pdf

So no need for work contract, Pnd91 or social security docs? Consulate in Amsterdam where I have gotten a few visas in the past requires a lot more.

2) Should the employers letter to the consulate be in English or Thai?

3) Is it cheaper to exchange Thai Baht to Ringgit in Thailand or Malaysia?

4) I see quite a few old posts where local Jim took care of the application and pick up. How much did he charge for that service? Or any other reputable agent?

5) most important, what is the cost of cigarettes (Camel) at Padang Besar duty free area?

6) Anything else I should be aware of?

thanks all!

1. The list on the Kuala Lumpur embassy website may not be the same as what the Penang consulate's are.

The thaiembassy.org website is down so I could not check your list (same for the consular affairs and MFA sites).

The from a file that appeared on the Penang website before.

Source: Penang requiremts.pdf Note fees are not correct. A single entry non-b is now 300 RM.

2. Thai

3. Not sure. But I would say buying it in Malaysia  would be best.

4. Jim is the most well known agent in Penang. His fees are not that high from I have seen.

5. I have no idea.

If there is a branch of SuperRich (https://www.superrichthailand.com/#!/en) convenient to you (they now have many branches) that is your best solution. Unfortunately, their website no longer has a list of their branches, but if you call them on 02 254 4444 maybe they can advise of a branch in your area.

I hear that they only give 1 year non-b visas to company directors/shareholders now in Penang.

That is correct but the OP only wants a single entry non-b visa.

Quick update as I just returned from Penang. I used Jim for a single entry nonB visa. Required were;

- Company docs from DBD. (Registration & purpose, budget, shareholders)

- Passport plus copy

- Workpermit plus copy

- Invitation letter from employer (Thai and English)

- Employment Contract (Thai and English).

Everything went smooth and I wasnt asked to show 20,000 or my workpermit at the Pedang Besar border  upon re entering Thailand.

I did find my car handcuffed to a fence though, ?  as I left it at the border parking while in Penang. Security guard removed the handcuffs after explaining we shouldn't have parked there overnight.

I combined the trip trip with a midweek sightseeing Penang with the family, and had a great time.
