Burnham folds on snap election after polls expose the risk

Burnam election.jpg

THE ELECTION THAT VANISHED

Andy Burnham has finally killed off speculation that he could call a snap general election, declaring that the next election will be held in 2029.

The Prime Minister had spent days refusing to completely shut down the idea, but hardened his position during a series of interviews ahead of Labour's annual conference in Liverpool.

“All of this speculation on an early election, I can knock that dead,” Burnham said, insisting that he wanted to concentrate on governing rather than put the country through another election campaign.

THE POLLS WERE THE PROBLEM

The timing is striking because the latest polling shows Labour recovering under Burnham — but not necessarily enough to give him the parliamentary majority he would want from an early election.

YouGov's latest constituency-by-constituency MRP projects Labour as the largest party on 241 seats, but 85 short of the 326 needed for an overall majority.

The Conservatives are projected on 130 seats and Reform on 123, with the Lib Dems on 71 and the SNP on 40.

KEMI: HE FOLDED

Kemi Badenoch seized on the change of direction, describing Burnham as “a gambler who folded”.

The Conservative leader said the Prime Minister had spent weeks leaving the possibility of an early election open before deciding that “his cards aren't good enough”.

Nigel Farage also said Reform was ready for an election whenever one was called.

THE BROWN COMPARISON

The retreat has inevitably revived memories of Gordon Brown's decision in 2007 to abandon speculation about an early election after polls turned against him.

The comparison gives Burnham's opponents an obvious political line: a new Prime Minister talked about the possibility of going to the country, watched the numbers and then decided to wait.

Burnham, however, says that is not the reason.

2029 IT IS

Burnham now says the next election will be in 2029 and insists his attention is elsewhere.

His first Labour conference as Prime Minister will therefore be about setting out his governing programme — including plans for greater public control of water, action on the cost of living and changes to the railways.

He has also acknowledged that Labour's increase in employers' National Insurance has placed pressure on businesses, while arguing that economic growth must now be the priority.

THE GAMBLE GOES ON

The irony is that the election speculation has not really disappeared — it has simply been postponed.

Burnham has a political mandate to govern as Prime Minister, but he does not have a personal general-election mandate.

The latest YouGov numbers show Labour recovering but still short of a majority, while the Conservatives and Reform remain locked in a battle for second place.

For now, Burnham has chosen to stay in No 10 rather than roll the dice at the ballot box.

And Kemi Badenoch is already claiming he looked at his cards — and folded.

MPs are debating whether Labour has recovered enough ground to risk going back to voters early.

Burnham himself has tried to shut down that speculation, describing the idea of an early election as something he wanted to “knock dead” in interviews before conference. But privately, some Labour MPs and ministers remain unconvinced.

“There are calculations being made,” one minister said, according to the source. “How much are the Tories and Reform cancelling each other out?”

Another claimed Labour had recovered votes previously lost to the Greens, arguing that Zack Polanski’s leadership had looked stronger when Starmer was in charge but less so now.

The crucial test could come in Holborn and St Pancras. The by-election was triggered after Starmer quit as an MP following his departure as prime minister, and senior Labour figures have suggested its result could help determine whether an early election becomes a serious option.

One minister described the by-election as “definitely part of the calculation”, while warning that narrow political margins could change rapidly.

The big uncertainty is Reform UK. Labour figures are watching whether Reform’s reported slide in some polls represents a lasting change or whether the party can recover.

“There are still concerns about those red wall seats,” one senior figure said. Labour may currently benefit from tactical voting in some constituencies, the source reported, but the MP warned: “You cannot rely on that.”

That anxiety is particularly significant for senior Labour figures with vulnerable constituencies. Chancellor John Healey narrowly held his Yorkshire seat in 2019, while Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband in Doncaster and Yvette Cooper in Pontefract, Castleford and Knottingley also faced difficult contests.

Yet despite those fears, Labour MPs quoted in the article describe a markedly brighter atmosphere.

“Everyone is feeling more cheerful,” one MP said.

Another said: “Spirits have been lifted.”

A third offered a much harsher comparison with the previous leadership, saying Labour now felt it had “a fighting chance” where previously it had seemed “hopeless”.

The biggest difference, according to Labour figures quoted by the source, is communication.

One minister criticised Starmer and his former chief of staff Morgan McSweeney for repeatedly choosing what they believed were the wrong ways to sell government decisions.

The minister pointed to the winter fuel payment controversy, arguing that Labour could have focused on protecting the triple lock rather than announcing the cancellation of payments for some pensioners.

The same criticism was levelled at the welfare debate, which the minister said could have been presented as an increase rather than a cut.

Starmer’s personal communication style also remains a target. One Labour MP claimed he “just didn’t or maybe couldn’t speak to anybody”. Another said Starmer was “really not missed”.

The aftermath of Starmer’s departure has also fuelled the comparison. One MP contrasted his decision to leave Parliament with former prime minister Rishi Sunak, who remained an MP and continued making political contributions.

Burnham, by contrast, has embraced a much more visible public style.

He has appeared in social-media videos discussing pub snacks and buses, played guitar and maintained contact with Labour MPs and ministers.

“It makes such a change,” one veteran MP said.

Another argued that although the videos were playful, Burnham was still using them to make serious political points.

There is one notable exception to Burnham’s more expansive communication strategy: journalists.

He has held only one press conference as prime minister in almost three months, according to the source.

But one Labour MP argued that speeches and press conferences had not helped Starmer and could even have made matters worse.

Now Liverpool provides the next major test.

The conference will show whether Labour’s renewed optimism is merely a temporary mood shift or evidence of a deeper political recovery. With Reform still a concern in key constituencies and the possibility of an early election being quietly discussed, the party enters conference facing a question that could shape the next stage of Burnham’s premiership.

About the " Right Wing press "

Westminster sources said Downing Street advisers and MPs had been discussing the merits of an early poll but that even though the right was split, Labour would be at risk of losing its majority and having to form a coalition.

.

The Guardian revealed on Friday that Ravinder Athwal, the economist who wrote Labour’s 2024 manifesto, was taking on a senior role as an adviser to John Healey, the chancellor, to strengthen his team before the budget. This fuelled further speculation that the party’s preparations for a campaign were gathering pace.

I'm still hoping the government might bring in proportional representation before the next election. Coalition governments are what we need.

The Knob of the north found out 24k votes in a local election doesn't translate nationally and you know it.

A £2 bus ain't going warm anyone this winter, a gift of £88m to Hamas under the guise of Palestine will provoke the boiling unrest' that accommodating tens of thousands of undocumented illegals in luxurious cost free accommodation is bound to come.

Add no plan for the defence of the realm, trouble looming from Chagos, Falklands, Russia, Iran alienating our close Alli Israel' spiraling out of control energy prices and borrowing costs.

And no more Starmer type freebies and the plan was made party first at all costs🤔

Agreed.

With the provision that a boxing ring is set up in the HoC. All disputes are settled under the Marquess of Queensberry Rules, live-streamed on PPV TV. With all revenues going to pay off the national debt.

I reckon the National debt would be cleared in a year.

The good news is the Right wing will have a better chance in 2029 once Labour have increased taxes and really scewed the economy, maybe even IMF involvement

The bad news is 2+ years of UK declining with increased taxation, welfare out of control, poor growth and open borders

No I do not agree welfare is out of control.

Labour’s only answer is not tax more. PM Burnham’s response to the Badenoch’s call to cut welfare explained why.

14 years of Tory cuts to welfare with Austerity #1 and 2, increased poverty and entrenched welfare dependence.

Sad, austerity is just spending within your means, lefties don't understand that, I'm guessing you were a public sector worker or are receiving welfare otherwise you wouldn't have such daft views

Why and how, did National debt go from about £1.2 Trillion to around £2.6 Trillion under 14 years of Tory cuts ?

The stated aim of Austerity was to reduce the national debt.

It failed miserably while strangling the economy and increasing national debt:

Now explain why National debt under Labour went from £350 Billion to £1.2 Trillion.

Sold half the gold reserves

Raided private pension schemes

It was straightforward question.

No whataboutery was required.

If you are going to howl about 14 years of Tory cuts, then a reasonable question to ask is

How and why did the National Debt rise from £1.2 Trillion to around £2.6 Trillion during 14 years of cuts ?

It is also reasonable to ask, why the national debt under the previous Labour Government rose from £350 Billion to £1.2 Trillion.

Which is quite a feat, considering

They PFI'd everything

Sold half the Gold Reserve

Raided Private Pension pots.

But, but, but. Gets you laughed at
