Lets say you have $1,000 a month income so you get the letter from your embassy so you will still need to put  approximately B 400,000 in a Thai bank.   Must that B 400,000 be in the bank for 90 days before going for the visa renewal?

At current exchange rates 400k baht would barley be enough to meet the 800k baht requirement.

The rules do not state any amount of time the money has to be in the bank when using the combination of income and money in the bank option. But many offices now want it to be in the bank for 3 months (60 days if first extension) on the date of application for the extension of stay (it is not a visa).

YES you need additional 400K in the bank and use the combomethod U-joe is mentioning. But to be in the safeside put in some 450K instead, in case the currency rates changes to the worse.

Yep.

Too tight depending on what rate they look up and how the rate develops.

Better add 5% of the 800k (40000) to be safe from any arguing.
