What’s in Thailand’s New Mini-Submarine Project?

What’s in Thailand’s New Mini-Submarine Project?

A development has once again put the spotlight on Bangkok’s decades-old aspirations in this domain.

By Prashanth Parameswaran

On July 17, reports began surfacing out of Thailand that the government was moving forward with the construction of mini-submarines. Though few specifics have been publicly disclosed thus far and the process is expected to take a number of years to really get off the ground, the development has nonetheless put the spotlight once again on Bangkok’s decades-old aspirations in this domain.

As I have noted previously in these pages, over the past few years, Thailand has made some notable advances in terms of realizing its decades-long aspiration to acquire submarines. The most headline-grabbing of these was the approval of a deal to purchase submarines from China, initially concluded back in 2015 (See: “When Will Thailand’s First China Submarine Arrive?”).

Earlier this month, Thailand’s submarine pursuit was in the headlines again, albeit on a separate front. Reports surfaced that the current Thai government under Prayut Chan-o-cha was moving forward with a new project to design a so-called “midget” or mini-submarine, which had been in the works since late last year.

They are jumping ahead a bit and forgotten about citizens. Buy garbage collection trucks first.  Submarines comes later.

This is a perfect example of why there is the "Prime Directive".

Musk should not have left the mini-sub.

Not have left it? He's way to big to enter it in the first place.

The big boys can't stand the smell of garbage trucks, so subs' it is.

Leaving the mini sub  is like waving a bag of lollies in front of  a group of kids.

maybe trying to entice muskie back with promises of medical tourism projects, featuring the all electric tesla mini sub colonoscopy service?

But there is a lot more graft in Submarines, thats why.

I encourage someone to take a poll. Setup a person in front of the main super markets and ask the question.

Should the government buy more submarines or garbage collection trucks?

Collect all the signatures over 1 week and send results to all the news papers and the appropriate government offices.

This must be done by Thai nationals.

As it stands the government may not understand what community needs and just need some help in finding out.

Let's help the government do its best.

Maybe the plan is to use the Subs in the Gulf as Ocean Going Trash Trucks.

Just need to hook up a floating dumpster, and when you surface - hey presto ! you can collect all the floating crap in the Sea.

We all live in a mini submarine..... la la la

You would need nerves of steel (and an up-to-date will) to serve on one of these as a Thai Navy seaman assigned to this death trap.

Don't forget any project that involves vehicles, airplanes etc, puts money in the pockets of government officials. The cost will be estimated as 3 times over with the extra 66% going into pockets costing the tax payer..Needed or not this mini sub idea is a hot topic at this time.

I liken them to mini troughs, a few pigs with their snouts in the mini trough doesn't come across as disgusting as many pigs with their snouts in a huge trough!

Not so sure; before collecting garbage need to look for places to deposit. Many unused holes out there off coast.

It's becoming evident that the whole world thinks the ocean is just one big hole for dumping rubbish in.

Yea, ? good luck
