Thais are making far fewer regular old style phone calls on their phones.

Now they are using applications to a far greater degree than even before, Thai media has reported.

Secretary of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunications Commission Thakorn Tanthasit was announcing details of phone calls and data usage in the first quarter of 2018.

It showed a big change from the last quarter of 2017.

Usage for regular person to person phone calls was down 13% while data usage was up almost 17%.

Thai mobile phones were used to make 9 billion minutes of calls at the end of last year but in the first quarter of this year this had fallen to 8 billion minutes.

Data usage in the last quarter of 2017 was 1,003,033 terabytes. This rose to 1,208,046.

Thai Rath said this showed a marked shift in Thais turning to Line, WhatsApp, Skype, Messenger and KakaoTalk for their mobile communications.
