Govt considers buying decommissioned fishing trawlers

BANGKOK, 3rd August 2018 (NNT) - Deputy Prime Minister Gen Chatchai Sarikulya says the National Fisheries Association of Thailand is seeking help from the government to address labor shortages, while dismissing rumors that it is planning to seek assistance from His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn. 

 

According to Gen Chatchai, the meeting between members of the National Fisheries Association of Thailand, representatives of fishermen in 22 provinces and Labor Minister Pol Gen Adul Seangsingkaew over the shortages of workers went smoothly. 

 

Gen Chatchai denied that the National Fisheries Association was planning to submit a petition to His Majesty the King, claiming that the letter he received from the association indicates clearly that it is only seeking the assistance of the government. 

 

Meanwhile, a committee overseeing the mobilization and reform of public administration will convene a meeting in the middle of this month to discuss whether or not the government should buy decommissioned fishing trawlers from fishermen. The matter will later be proposed to the Cabinet for consideration.

This has the disaster makings of another poorly thought out government decision. Expect to hear more of this when things go pear shaped.

Could be turned into tourist pleasure boats, I hear a lot of Chinese visit Thailand.

Then pay millions every year , for mooring,for many years,until they sink.

everybody wants help from the government.

No doubt some enterprising entrepreneur will start promoting the latest in tour boat pricing.  'Is that a one way ticket sir.. or return? '

Did the fishermen refuse to fish as they said they would,  haven’t come across the outcome of that ????

Take then out to sea and sink hem for artificial reefs, some of my best diving has been on ship wrecks covered with coral..........after draining the fuel and oil of course.

Another thoughtless venture concerning shipping.  First, wasted major money on an aircraft carrier, along with inoperative Harriers which nobody thought to checkout before buying, then the demand for submarines (second hand?), now fishing vessels.  When will the governments of Thailand realise that the money could be better spent helping people who need assistance?  Probably never, because it seems the majority of Thais, whether in government or not, do not or cannot resist the inability to think, whatever that may mean to them, in a rational manner.

They should resell them to Elon Musk  at the super inflated,  quality farang,  price...

As you so adeptly pointed out, one of the Thai governments main talents seems to be the procurement of junk. One does wonder why these vessels should be bought with tax payer's money and for what purpose.
