BANGKOK, 7th August 2018 (NNT) - The government is confident that the draft act on the promotion of social enterprise will build sustainability in Thai communities.

Minister Attached to the Prime Minister's Office Kobsak Pootrakool made the comment during discussions held as part of the Thailand Social Expo 2018 in Nonthaburi province. The Promotion of Social Enterprise Bill has already been approved by the cabinet and is being deliberated by the National Legislative Assembly. The bill is expected to be promulgated at the beginning of next year.

Minister Kobsak explained that the bill will provide long term assistance to corporations that engage in social development activities. He pointed out that social development can come in many forms such as the employment of senior citizens and the disabled, and the provision of aid to the unprivileged.

Under the bill, the government will establish a social enterprise fund to provide financial assistance to entrepreneurs and companies that contribute to social development. Eligible corporations will also be entitled to tax exemptions.

The minister said the Prime Minister’s Office is currently accepting applications for social enterprises, adding that 26 companies have registered so far. Minister Kobsak said the social enterprise committee, which is headed by Deputy Prime Minister Gen. Chatchai Sarikalya, will conduct the screening process this week.

Because somebody is old or is disabled in some way, does not make them any less productive.  As with many things in Thailand, it sounds hinky.
