The new home for animals from Bangkok’s Dusit Zoo in Pathum Thani is being designed as “the Smithsonian of Southeast Asia”, the province’s governor says.

Phinit Boonlert said the facility in Thanyaburi district – for now known as the Pathum Thani Zoo – would occupy 300 rai in the Klong 6 area.

The Zoological Park Organisation had in June hired consultants to draw up plans within eight months for a zoo that meets international standards, he said.

Visitors will be able to learn about the wildlife and follow up through information links to 18 learning centres and museums in the province.

Phinit said Pathum Thani was “the gateway to Bangkok” and able to serve as a learning hub for Southeast Asia, appealing to both Thais and foreign tourists.

He chaired a meeting this week of associated agencies in the province to discuss the new zoo intended as the future long-term home of animals from Dusit Zoo, which will close by the end of August after 80 years of operation.

The 1,000-plus animals kept at Dusit will initially be housed at zoos in Khao Kheow, Chiang Mai, Nakhon Ratchasima, Songkhla, Ubon Ratchathani and Khon Kaen, according to Dusit Zoo’s Facebook page.

It's funny, they blurt out words that they have no idea what they mean/represent. Maybe he watched Night at the Museum and he got confused with those reanimated animals running around, not to mention good old Teddy.

..i predict due to neglect most of the animals will become stuffed museum pieces, so maybe he is correct!

...and liars, and withholding information, and barring the public from viewing pieces.

And Dr Doo little is going to manage the show.

Not sure about the Mitt-toneeya, but Pathum Thani has it's own Stonehenge.

Nice to see such enthusiasm anyway, reminds me of Arthur Daley's coach tours of the North Circular.... "over on the left you can see the block of flats where Ray's cousin lives..."

No, he's been transferred to an inactive post ...

Posters!

Could you imagine, I mean in your wildest phantasy and after your hangover is gone, that the govenor meant the Smithsonian National Zoological Park?

The carabao honorary medal is ready to be presented.

With Dusit zoo closing at the end of the month, and the new zoo being maybe 5 years away, Bangkok may never get another zoo.

In reality not a bad thing.
