Hope floats to raise the Phoenix

PHUKET: After weeks of preparations, a team of salvage operators are today (Aug 14) hoping to complete the recovery of the Phoenix tour boat, which sank in a storm squall of Koh Hei (Coral Island) on July 5.

 

Of the 89 tourists that the Phoenix was carrying when it capsized and sank late that afternoon, 47 Chinese tourists died.

 

The stricken vessel now lies on the seabed at a depth of about 45 metres, some 1.5 nautical miles off Koh Hei, south of Phuket.

She is in 45 metres of water which requires technical diving skills to attach any cables.

 

With the high winds and seas combined with the spring tide currents I am not surprised it has taken this long.

Water looks fairly calm at photo taking.

By the look of the steelwork on that barge, it won't be long before that's also on the seabed.

It's a Malaysian vessel. Thai don't have anything that shipshape. ?

Hope the crew all have current tetanus shots.
