Jai Dee Posted February 7, 2007 Share Posted February 7, 2007 Survey says 8.8% of Thai youths hope to have sex on Feb 14 The Social Warning Center has disclosed that 8.8 percent of Thai youths and teenagers are looking forward to have sexual intercourse on Valentine’s Day (Feb 14). The head of the Social Warning Center under the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security, Mr. Suradet Chayakasetrin, said his center conducted a survey on 21,546 Thai preteens and teenagers in 72 provinces throughout Thailand. The respondents are students from grade 10 to university-level. According to the survey, 48.9 percent of the respondents do not have any expectation on Valentine’s Day, 23.1 would like to receive gifts from their fiancés, 13.9 would like their partners to confess their love, and the remaining 8.8 hope to have sex with their loved ones. The survey further reveals that more male youths and teenagers give more importance to Valentine’s Day than their counterparts by sextuple. Many high school students who are living in dormitories also admit that they would like to have sex on February 14th more than the ones who are living with their parents by five times. Mr. Suradet said provinces in the country have many entertainment venues, but the officials have enforced stringent regulations for those venues and dormitories as well as hotels. Mr. Suradet said the officials are keeping an eye on business operators so they would not sell alcoholic beverages to people under 18 years old. Casanundra Posted February 7, 2007 Share Posted February 7, 2007 Well judging by how many condoms get sold in the local 7/11 near the University each week and how many of them walk out with them blazingly on show in their handbags (yes I am meaning the girls are all doing the buying) then I would suggest that many have decided to either not wait until the 14th and are already hard at it, or they are storing up their nuts for the winter fest. Jai Dee Posted February 8, 2007 Author Share Posted February 8, 2007 Valentine poll shows 'worrying' youth sex trends Amid concerns of parents that the emotional atmosphere of Valentine's Day might persuade teenage sweethearts to have premature sex, a recent survey found that one third of teenage girls are willing to give up their innocence on Valentine's Day - if their boyfriends ask them. The results of the survey conducted by the Abac Poll, the Thai Health Promotion Foundation and Queen Sirikit National Institute of Child Health was revealed at Bangkok's Yothinburana School yesterday. Polling 1,578 teenagers between 10 and 24 years old in Bangkok and adjacent areas during February 1-4, the survey studied teenagers' sexual attitudes towards Valentine's Day. However, about 36 per cent of respondents said they would prefer to break up with their partner rather than be persuaded to have sex just because it was Valentine's night. Sixteen per cent said they would be willing to have sex if it involved love, emotion, curiosity, pleasure and marriage commitment. The rest were undecided. Most of the respondents thought that a teenager over 18 is mature enough to have sexual affairs. Only 23 per cent said they didn't know a friend who'd had a sexual experience. The survey also found that half of the teenagers always consulted friends on sexual issues, followed by their parents. Thai Health deputy manager Dr Krissada Ruangareerat revealed the "worrying rate" of 15 to 18-year-old girls who had unwanted pregnancies in Thailand, which has increased from 70/1,000 teenagers in 2004 to 90/1,000 last year. Dr Krissada was deeply concerned because the rate is 20 times more than in Japan where only four in 1,000 girls had an unwanted pregnancy a year. The rate in the USA had dropped from 120/1,000 to only 49/1,000 in some states thanks to the policy of providing space for healthy activities to teenagers as well as their better knowledge of birth control and the laws on abortion. "If the problem isn't solved, we predict the number in Thailand will increase to 120/1,000 in the next two years." The doctor said Thai teenagers only had a few channels to get sexual information. Most of them looked for information from the Internet and often found the wrong data - which sometimes created problems. Researchers found that 1: There is a high level of promiscuity among Thai teenagers often associated with heavy drinking. 2: There are very high levels of teenage prostitution, both formalised and freelance. 3: All Thais will deny this even on pain of death. Which in turn means 240/1000 girls (or women, if you prefer) -- 24% -- will become mothers before their 19th birthday. At 120/1000 and 2/3, it rises to 32%. So it seems early childbirth rates in Thailand are trending back towards pre-industrial levels. Actually teen pregnancy rates are probably still much lower than a century ago, but birthrates are going to be similar because of advances in health care and nutrition. And in this new context they are not underpinned by marriage as often as they formerly were. One of the historical keys to social development has always been delay of first childbirth by women.
