Mong Thongdee’s dream of becoming a Thai citizen is one step closer to reality after the Local Administration Department approved his citizenship application.

The stateless man born to Myanmar migrant workers in Chiang Mai was informed of the Local Administration Department’s approval of his application for citizenship in a letter sent to him by Mr Preecha Sirinam, deputy district chief of Chiang Mai’s Muang district on Thursday.

Mong said he was very glad that his dream would soon be fulfilled after ten years of waiting.  He planned to go the Chiang Mai district office with all the relevant documents, including the letter from the deputy district chief of Chiang Mai, on Monday.

I can hazard a guess that translation from Thai>English and Diplomacy>Straight-talk could be something like:

"Due to the publicity generated in the world press and social media regarding the four stateless persons trapped in a cave recently, and subsequently being awarded Thai citizenship, it has come to our attention that you are casting Thailand in a bad light, therefore it has been decided to expedite your own Thai citizenship request to remedy the situation."

Or am I too cynical?

Whatever the cause you go mong don’t give up and good luck!!!

A little cynical maybe, but right on the money.
