PM orders Big Data collected on rice market

BANGKOK, 4 September 2018 (NNT) – The Prime Minister has ordered Big Data on rice demand, be collected more accurately so as to calculate production, while the National Rice Policy and Planning Commission has approved an increase in the quota of organic rice for sale to Europe to 5,000 tons. 

Prime Minister Gen Prayut Chan-ocha chaired the latest meeting of the National Rice Policy and Planning Commission, which decided to increase the quota for un-milled organic rice and GAP rice to Europe from 2,000 tons to 5,000 tons annually. The move is to encourage the growing of organic and GAP rice after up to 60,000 tons was grown last year and a target of 280,000 tons has been set for this year. 

The PM asked that relevant agencies ensure understanding among flood hit farms that they may have to sacrifice crops for the retention of water, saying they should explain that the situation resembles that seen during the rescue mission for the Tham Luang 13. Studies to carry out the order are to be completed within one month. 

Gen Prayut also ordered Big Data be collected on the rice market, the water situation and rice production so that a clearer picture can be seen and so that rice cultivation can be synchronized with demand. A plan for the undertaking is to be completed this month.

The meeting later decided to adjust its rice stock pledging program to increase the number of farmers with rice stocks taking part.

Looks like another job for Big Joke to collect Big Data .   Could this be heading towards another rice Big Scandal and this is the start of the Big cover up ?

Apart from the obvious question, who is Big Data?

 

Surely any competent agriculture department or largish business would have this information as part of their standard record keeping. To improve the supply chain the blockage is to successfully educate the farmers to be adaptable business people.

He is saying we can't fix the water problem as we are incapable to do so, but we can and we will flood you every year, so I need the data that tells my Junta of how much rice tax we will be missing on export sales.

In Thailand, there are times and seasons for everything to tinker with or to release a statements that boggles the minds and reasoning, and now it's time to do the rice thing, he want to know everything about the rice situation, true figures, not con jobs, not messaged figures to suit this minister of that head of department, what will come out of it? nothing, nada, Zilch, said to day, all but forgotten by next week...

Jeez . . . you can actually hear this cretin's brain working. Whilst struggling to address a rice market issue, he sees the opportunity, not only to help lessen the risk of his own house - Govt House, of course - being flooded, by brainwashing poor farmers into sacrificing their crops, but also to jump aboard the overwhelmingly worthy cause of dragging out the Tham Luang hysteria which had him single-handedly bigging-up the reputation of the Thai armed forces, whilst getting all tearful. You really must hand it to this guy . . . at least for another 6mths.

Well said, however I rather doubt the various agencies have continuous automatic big data collection and automatic analysis and reporting. 

 

Teach the farmers to be business people.... nice idea but in the past in many areas farmers automatically did what they were instructed to do (what crops, trees etc., to grow) by the local know-all know-nothing agricultural officers, and in many cases total disaster.

 

To jump from the situation above to being good business people is too big a jump.

 

There's a long bumpy road ahead unfortunately.

Actually 'big data' is the current flavor of the decade in terms of very sophisticated supply chains models and actions, and value chain models and actions:

 

- Continuous automatic data collection (big and small) > continuous automatic analysis (programmed and analysis introduced by artificial intelligence) > continuous dash board reporting and automatic directives (within some programmed boundaries).

 

The above systems are nowadays often full enterprise systems and are used by many of the worlds best performing companies (operational and business performance). Including manufacturing  and agriculture.

 

Vietnam is in the process of building these approaches in manufacturing and in agriculture.  In the agricultural sector farmers and retail customers must (by law) receive bigger benefits compared to other stakeholders in the supply and value chains.

I'm not sure of the importance to differentiate "program" from "scheme."

Just will point out that "program" is how Yingluck's rice pledge was commonly described.

Someone needs to education dear leader on what the term 'Big Data' actually refers to ?
