Business Development Department of the Ministry of Commerce is attempting to create economical value through Thai restaurants in the country by officially awarding 579 certified restaurants with "Thai SELECT" brand. Certified restaurants were divided into three categories: Thai SELECT PREMIUM (7 restaurants), Thai SELECT (522 restaurants), and Thai SELCT UNIQUE (50 restaurants).

The campaign invited all to help promote Thailand to both domestic and international tourists through authentic Thai cuisines that offer fine and impressive dining experience, Sakon Varanyuwatana, Vice Minister of Commerce, said yesterday.

Thai SELECT certification in Thailand have been awarded to 579 restaurants throughout the country under six categories: taste (30 points), ingredients (20 points), sanitation (20 points), menu (10 points), restaurant decoration/atmosphere (10 points), and services (10 points).

The awarded restaurants were classified into three categories 1) Thai SELECT PREMIUM, which recently certified seven restaurants: Blue Elephant Bangkok and Phuket, Krua Patha, Osha Thai Restaurant and Bar, Baan Suriyasai, and Sala Rim Naam.

The Thai SELECT PREMIUM certified restaurants are proven to have refined quality Thai cuisine, authentic menu, restaurant decoration that shows Thai culture, and excellent services (restaurants with a total score of 90 and above).

2) Thai SELECT certified 522 restaurants that offer great quality of Thai cuisines and authentic Thai menu (with a score of 75 to 89).

3) Thai SELECT UNIQUE went to 50 restaurants with similar attributes as those in the Thai SELECT category but are especially offering local menus that show the local authentic food (with a score of 75 to 89), he said.

What a stupid idea.

This is (yet another!) an example of the idiocy of the Junta turning over day-to-day governance of Thailand to the Bureaucracy and having the Bureaucracy go mad.

The Ministry of Commerce is now a restaurant critic?

How the hell does the Ministry of Commerce become a restaurant critic?

This is a clear-cut example of someone in the ministry having the great idea that the Ministry should expand its reach and influence in order to create a personal 'empire' within the ministry, complete with power and budget.

Are Commerce ministry bureaucrats qualified to judge restaurants? Nope.

Do they have money to spend on their whims? It appears so.

Bureaucracy gone mad = Thailand as a third-world country, forever.

Sad, sad times for beloved Thailand.

Wonder "how  much"  it  will cost to join?

No doubt there will be " a unique premium" required to be one of the "select".

The qualification level of underpaid bureaucrats rises in relation to the weight of brown envelopes in exchange for any certification. That's why they call it Thai value.

Well, so much for the rich & Grung Thep. The decor is a nice-to-have, so are the lovely well-dressed waiters, but not essential.

It would have more relevance for most people - both locals & falangs - if they singled out high-quality Thai food in average or poor-area restaurants & cafes, including Isaan and the south.

As one envelope closes another one opens

Its junta mania and authoritarian fever.  They do not care what others think about Khaosan Road, JJ night market, universal suffrage or freedom of speech.

What bothers me the most about Bangkok restaurants is rice ala carte .  You pay 10B for a tiny portion of rice.  One of my favorite restaurants in KL had stacks of sacks of Thai rice.  They do not charge extra for rice.  Hong Kong, another importer of Thai rice, does not charge extra for rice.  Just the nickel and diming pettiness of Thailand can be annoying at times.

People who really know Thailand, know where to eat and do not need to government assistance.

I'd  settle for anywhere that's just plain "clean"

Just another 'little earner'.  He who pays the most will will be the most 'select' !

Tells  a  lot  about  someone's  character to  live  like  this  though.

As the government have become involved, Prawit has apparently taken a personal interest in assessing the sanitation category. This one should run and run.

"Thai SELECT" brand certificates will be available on Khao San Road from tomorrow.
