Vlogger Films Alleged Cocaine Offers on Bangkok’s Sukhumvit Road

Featured Replies

A foreign vlogger films men offering him cocaine on Sukhumvit while his young son is beside him, putting Bangkok’s cocaine problem in focus.

A foreign travel vlogger has raised concerns about apparent street-level drug dealing in central Bangkok after filming several men allegedly offering him cocaine while he walked along Sukhumvit Road with his nine-year-old son.

YOUNG DAUGHTER THOUGHT DEALER MEANT COCA-COLA

The vlogger, known online as GlobetrotterJulez, said he decided to document the encounters after repeatedly being approached the previous day while carrying his four-year-old daughter.

During one encounter, he claimed a man offered him “coke”, prompting his daughter to mistakenly believe the stranger was offering Coca-Cola.

After being approached several times that day, the vlogger returned to Sukhumvit on August 18 to record what was happening. This time, he wore Meta smart glasses while his nine-year-old son accompanied him.

NUMEROUS APPROACHES DURING SHORT WALK

During a daytime walk lasting approximately 30 to 40 minutes, the vlogger recorded numerous men approaching or attempting to engage him.

He estimated that he was approached at least 10 times, with several encounters allegedly involving offers of cocaine. The presence of his young son appeared to do little to discourage some of those approaching him.

No drugs were shown changing hands in the footage, and the activities of the individuals recorded have not been independently verified.

QUESTIONS OVER DEALING IN BUSY TOURIST AREA

The footage has nevertheless raised concerns about how openly suspected drug dealers appear able to approach foreigners along one of Bangkok’s busiest tourist and entertainment corridors.

Sukhumvit Road and its surrounding sois attract large numbers of international visitors and contain some of the capital’s best-known hotels, bars, restaurants and nightlife districts.

The vlogger stressed that his criticism was directed at the apparent drug dealing rather than the nationality or ethnicity of those shown in his footage.

COCAINE REMAINS HEAVILY RESTRICTED IN THAILAND

Cocaine is classified as a Category 2 narcotic in Thailand, with trafficking, importing, exporting and selling the drug carrying severe criminal penalties.

Thai authorities have made a number of arrests involving international cocaine trafficking networks operating through Bangkok and other parts of the country.

The footage has since generated online discussion about drug enforcement in central Bangkok and whether a greater police presence is needed in parts of Sukhumvit where tourists are frequently approached.

Thailand wants to be a number one tourist destination. But there is some work to be done... A working police force, visible on the streets and non corrupt, would be a good start. Offering drugs to walk byers are not done... Make Thailand safe again and worth to visit

Operation Black Eagle should be revived and used wherever in Thailand it is needed - not just Lower Suky.

The reports of expedited deportations for lawbreakers sound like maybe they're getting serious about cleaning things up.

Time will tell.

Well maybe if people are serious about this, and not in it for clicks and likes,

They should go to the cop shop, not the cops on the street.

I personally am shocked by the level of drugs just so rampantly available. Since the marijuana laws were relaxed there seems to be trash tourists attracted by this - who want stronger stuff too.

Ted, that was rather the point. We're commenting on a story about people allegedly offering cocaine openly on Sukhumvit Road, so Thailand hardly needs American drug culture to “wash up on these shores”. And of course Mr Trump has now sorted all that unpleasant drug business out in America and made the country officially Great Again — hence my comment. Besides, probably ripping off gullible tourists by selling them baking powder isn't quite the crime some people seem to think it is. I had rather hoped the irony was obvious.

Do you really believe the cops don't know? Everyone knows. Who is making the money from pretending there is nothing going on?

You only have to look at this Mr.V. logg and you can see that he has got " I am a druggo " all over him so of course he is a target for the street dealers they have got to make a living you know ..They don't target well dressed 70 year old men with a walking stick do they ?

It sounded very racist to me

I thought the tailors were annoying on Phuket days past.

The police are fully aware of them but don't care, because they are also fully aware that they get paid whether they work or not. About once a year they'll have a 'crackdown' on the crack suppliers, same as they do with an occasional roundup of the 'entertainment providers' on Nana, same as they do with an annual raid on fake goods sellers.

I always go to Nana area Sukhumvit when i come to Thailand which has been many many i have never been offered cocaine or anything besides watches (let alone with a young kid in tow)and im a pot smoker.. personally i have had a gut full of these “vloggers” spreading fake <deleted>..take him to where it supposedly happened and if incorrect he deserves a holiday in Bkk Hilton then instant deportation for defaming Thailand

I have been a regular to Bangkok for 14 years and often walk along that area. I have never been offered drugs but I also never make eye contact or say hello to the the black guys hanging around. So they have never bothered me. Unlike the ladyboys who tend to approach more often.

This vlogger is obviously baiting the sellers by greeting them and making eye contact. He is doing it for the clicks and views.

You do see these guys frequently (or I did living on soi 11)....Nigerian at a guess......they never seem to hassle, actually quite polite. Their main method of contact is if you hold eye contact.

Their numbers vary, time/place and whether or not the police have recently been ordered to shoo them away.

I have never been to that area, but it makes sense that they wouldn't get too aggressive or too many tourists would file complaints to the police and that would bring heat on themselves.
