Final public hearing organized on draft law on promotion of journalistic ethics

BANGKOK, 28th September 2018, (NNT) - The Public Relations Department and the committee for the urgent implementation of reform plans have jointly held a final public hearing in the central region on a draft law concerning the promotion of media ethics before submitting feedback to the Cabinet and the National Legislative Assembly (NLA).

The final hearing was held in Bangkok. The previous three hearings were held in Phitsanulok, Khon Kaen and Songkhla provinces.

The forum explained reform approaches to the media, information technology and details of the draft law on ethical journalism. The organizers went over the details of the establishment of a council of the press, which will be comprised of representatives of five related professions and four experts from concerned sectors. The council's duties are to ensure the freedom of the press, improve the standards of the media, and govern members of the media according to the ethical codes.

The hearing later shifted to a discussion among specialists in the field of public relations, the legislature and members of the sub-committee on the draft Media Ethics Act. A Q&A session was held at the end of the discussion.

A senior member of the press and a former member of the now-defunct National Reform Council Boonlert Kachayuthadej raised his concerns about a section regarding freedom of the press. The draft law states that the council of the press would oversee matters related to the freedom of the press, but Boonlert argued that more effort may be needed to secure the freedom of the press in Thai society.

More feedback can still be submitted to the committee and the Public Relations Department at www.thailawreform.go.th and www.prd.go.th.

Ethics, that's just east of London isn't it, on the North bank of the River Thames?

And I submit, Ladies and Gentleman that this feeble witticism has about as much relevance to journalistic ethics as all their deliberations....

General ethical behaviour as applying to......??

Intuitive nature, less manufactured.

Journalistic ethics is code for...........do not take advantage of the countless opportunities that allow you to make a complete idiot of the man trying to run the show.

I'd be more curious as to explore what passes for journalism/journalists these days - the world over.

What is considered to be journalism today, might be suspect throughout some circles.

Somewhere along the way, we've missed the boat.

[forgive me, I might be old school]

The ethics would be silencing them.

Print what we want or we will sue you for defamation! This is the sad way the whole world is going now. No one is allowed to voice their own opinion if it upsets others. Before people would just take it on the chin or show they were slandered. Today it is suing for money rather than just standing up and taking it like an adult, rather than a child spitting their dummy out!
