I need to go about getting a police report from the UK in order to get a non-immi B visa (teacher) application in. Some questions:

1) Which checks are required and how does one apply?

2) What is the latest on this - is the police report really being asked for to get the visa? And the teacher's licence?

Thanks all

Nobody really knows. Embassies and consulates have been told to ask for some kind of police clearances for applicants who intend to teach in Thailand. The UK apparently has two levels of clearances, one of which is referred to as the CRB, I think. The CRB is so difficult to get, that the Thai authorities might accept the less thorough clearance which is easier to get (something like a 'subject clearance'?). Whatever document you get will look good, especially if it has colored stamps, impressive logos, or is on fancy paper; they probably wouldn't know a real from a fake (but do get the real one)

You don't say where you are. If you're in the UK, it should be easy. In Thailand, much more difficult.

1) Apparently you personally apply at your local constabulary, and it may be easy peasy for ten quid. Perhaps fingerprints are taken.

2) Ring the embassy at London or an honorary consulate such as Hull or Cardiff to ask them their latest requirement. A few weeks ago, they 'really' were asking for this. As to what you really need, nobody knows for sure.

I apologize if my usage of words like constabulary, easy peasy, or ten quid were misplaced. We don't talk like that in Texas. :o Good luck, y'all.

Last, here's a chance to plug our little 'teaching in thailand' forum on ThaiVisa. This is one thread that discussed this at painstaking length:

Thanks Peaceblondie for your information.

Thanks for the link, which I had actually been following a couple of weeks back. I was hoping that there may have been a few miracle stories since. Alas!

I am in Shanghai at the moment, so I am going to do the thing by post. The problem is I haven't got a home address in the UK, as I haven't lived there for years. I am hoping that they will just run my name through the magic computer and find nothing against my name without paying too much attention to the address.

PS:

I am a UK born Aussie, so I wouldn't normally use words like "constabulary" or "ten quid" either!

Lopburi3,

I have seen this link before, which is all about getting a police clearance from the THAI police. What's this all about? Is it required in addition to the UK police report? I have previously held a work permit in Thailand, so does that mean if I go back there and apply I can get the Thai police report INSTEAD of the UK one?

Still confused! :-S

It is designed to be an alternative. But not sure if Special Branch is really doing or not as have not seen many reports from teachers in the visa section.

B. Foreign applicant residing in the United Kingdom and Ireland who have previously worked or resided in Thailand can apply for Police Clearance Certificates at the special Branch, Royal Thai Police at the following address :

Building 24, Royal Thai Police Headquarters,

Rama 1, Pathumwan, Bangkok 10330, Thailand

Luke - you dont need a UK address. I did mine 100% from Thailand. The British PNC is a NATIONAL computer so where you have previously lived (in the UK) doesnt matter.

They run the check through the Police National Computer (The PNC).

Here's how it works.

They put in your surname/name/date of birth/sex/skin colour and height.

If your name is Fred Blogs then more than one "hit" might come back.

However the chances of someone having exactly the same surname/forname and DOB as you are actually quite unlikely in the UK.

If that IS the case though, they could then ask you for where you have lived, or for other identifiable features like birth marks or tatoos.

However, you have highlighted a flaw in the system. You state you havent lived in the UK for years. So, you could have committed numerous deviant sex acts in a host of asian countries, though not Thailand, and your UK AND your Thai police check would both come back clean.

I dont see any immediate way of the authorities resolving this problem either.

Anyway that is the UK system, so apply as soon as you can as it can/will take 40 days.

The British embassy website in Bangkok also has a link where you can download the subject access forms.
