Many people have a negative opinion of the famous word game of Scrabble.

Some think the board game is just that - bored! They would rather watch paint dry.

But in Nakorn Ratchasima at the weekend the Thais proved that Scrabble could be sexy and fun!

A number of innovations including attractive female helpers dressed as witches saw to that!

The Word Wizard Challenge 2018 attracted hundreds of participants to the Korat Hall at Central Plaza in the north eastern Thai city.

There were many students as well as Thai adults who are among the best players in the world.

The top table games were streamed live over the internet to a worldwide audience.

The event was worth 200,000 baht in prizes.

The event was organised by local entrepreneur Akkrapol Kwansak who runs an academy teaching Scrabble to children in the city.

He believes in making Scrabble fun and encouraging tactical thinking and creativity as much as promoting improved English language skills.

He has been named an ambassador for youth Scrabble by the world governing body WESPA (World English Scrabble Players' Association) and is determined to bring the game to a wider audience and improve its image worldwide.

The game is already played by many thousands of Thais especially in schools and universities nationwide after thirty five years of promotion by the national Crossword Game Club.

The international championships in Bangkok have been won by the best player in the world, Nigel Richards of New Zealand, many times. The game receives the patronage of the Thai Royal Family and the backing of big business.

The Open Division in Korat featured two foreigners - A Bangkok resident and a teacher from Mukdahan both from the UK - neither of whom could even challenge the Thais for the top ten.

The event was won by Jakkrit Klaphajone, a doctor from Chiang Mai, who has consistently been one of the best players in the world in a crossword gaming career spanning three decades.
