USA Kamala Harris Shuns California Governor Bid, Eyes 2028 Presidential Run
video screenshot Kamala Harris, former vice president, has confirmed she will not be running for governor of California, quashing months of speculation. Harris, who played a pivotal role as Joe Biden’s vice president before becoming the Democratic nominee in 2024, shared her decision on Wednesday. “I love this state, its people, and its promise,” she said, expressing her deep connection to California. Harris emphasised her commitment to public service, saying she will instead focus on supporting Democrats nationwide. “For now, my leadership will not be in elected office," she said. She hinted at further announcements in the coming months, suggesting a continued role in the national political scene. The decision also keeps Harris’s options open for a possible 2028 presidential run. A source close to Harris expressed that she is keeping her options open for 2028. Although a gubernatorial run would not have barred her from a presidential bid, it would have placed certain limitations on her political capacities, reported NBC News. The choice not to run for governor follows months of internal deliberation. Sources describe it as a difficult process for Harris, who seeks to maximise her impact. Her immediate plans include exploring nonprofit work and potentially establishing a political action committee (PAC). She is also gearing up to campaign for Democratic candidates in upcoming midterms. Harris has a storied history in California, having served as the state attorney general and then as a U.S. senator. Her career took a national turn when she assumed the vice presidency after Biden’s 2020 election victory. In 2024, Harris stepped into the role of Democratic presidential nominee after Biden exited the race. Her announcement opens up the governorship race, as term limits prevent current Governor Gavin Newsom from seeking re-election. Several prominent Democrats have already entered the fray, including Lt. Gov. Eleni Kounalakis, Xavier Becerra, and former Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, among others. The Democratic stronghold of California is likely to remain under the party’s control despite the competitive nature of the upcoming gubernatorial race. Harris’s decision not to enter the race preserves the opportunity for other candidates to carve their paths. As Harris steps back from the governor’s race, she remains focused on shaping the national dialogue and engaging with issues on a broader scale. A person close to her insisted she would still be a significant voice in debates concerning Donald Trump and other national matters. Harris’s future announcements are eagerly anticipated, with hints they might not pertain solely to the 2028 election. Her involvement in California’s political scene will continue, albeit from a non-elected position, influencing the Democratic discourse and supporting emerging leaders. In summary, although Kamala Harris has chosen not to run for California governor, her political journey continues. Her efforts will remain focused on national issues and supporting the Democratic Party, potentially setting the stage for a 2028 presidential run. Adapted by ASEAN Now from NBC News 2025-07-31 -

Crime Drug Dealer Caught at Party in Ayutthaya – Attempts to Bribe Officials with 200,000 Baht
Picture courtesy of Khaosod. A suspected methamphetamine dealer was arrested in the middle of a drinking party in Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya province after allegedly trying to sell drugs to undercover officers, then attempting to bribe them with 200,000 baht in cash in exchange for his release. According to Mr. Niwat Rungsakorn, Governor of Ayutthaya, the arrest took place as part of a government-led crackdown under the “No Drugs No Dealers” campaign. Acting on reports from concerned residents near Bang Rakam Subdistrict in Nakhon Luang District, authorities launched a surveillance and sting operation. Officers posing as buyers arranged to purchase 1,000 methamphetamine tablets from a suspect later identified as Mr. Phichit aged 54. During the planned meeting, Mr. Phichit was observed drinking alcohol with others when he placed a packet of methamphetamine on the table. Officers immediately moved in and arrested him. A search of the suspect revealed an additional gram of crystal methamphetamine hidden on his person. During the arrest, Mr. Phichit attempted to bribe the officers with 200,000 baht in cash. However, officials refused the bribe and proceeded with formal charges. Another suspect, Mr. Phaiwan, aged 35, was arrested during a follow-up sweep of the same area. He was found in possession of 55 methamphetamine pills in an alley near Wat Wang in Bang Rakam. Mr. Phichit has been charged with possession of a Category 1 narcotic (methamphetamine) with intent to distribute, as well as attempting to bribe public officials. Mr. Phaiwan faces charges of unauthorised possession and use of methamphetamine. Mr. Anon Chaichat, Assistant District Officer for Ayutthaya, personally addressed Mr. Phichit following the arrest, warning him that bribery is a criminal offence and that the authorities involved in the operation strictly uphold the law. He added that while Mr. Phichit must face punishment, his cooperation could result in a reduced sentence if it leads to the arrest of further offenders. Authorities say efforts to dismantle drug networks in the province will continue, with increased patrols and community intelligence gathering. Adapted by Asean Now from Khoasod 2025-07-31 -

Report Australia’s Teen Screen Lockdown: YouTube Joins Social Media Ban
Picture courtesy of The Keyword In a groundbreaking move, Australia has included YouTube in its upcoming ban on social media access for under-16s, set to commence this December. The restriction, which initially targeted platforms like TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, X, and Snapchat, will now also prevent teenagers from holding YouTube accounts. Although the restriction allows viewing, it no longer allows uploading content or interacting. Google, YouTube’s parent company, had hoped for an exemption, arguing the platform provides value to young Australians, claiming it’s not true social media. However, Australia’s eSafety Commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, highlighted the platform as a major source of harmful content for ages 10 to 15, prompting its inclusion. Amid global interest, countries like Norway are considering similar actions, with the UK contemplating involvement. Prime Minister Anthony Albanese assured parents that the ban, while not a complete solution, is a significant step towards combating social harm. The move has sparked debates, with a spokesperson from YouTube expressing disappointment and hinting at continued discussions with the government. Reports even emerged of potential legal action threatened by Google to contest the ban. Federal Communications Minister Anika Wells emphasised the need to protect youngsters from predatory algorithms. Despite acknowledging the usefulness of social media, she insisted this action is necessary for protecting children amidst a digital landscape comparable to "swimming in an ocean with sharks." Exemptions will apply to apps related to gaming, messaging, education, and health, which are considered less harmful. Tech companies failing to adhere to these new rules could face hefty penalties, up to A$50 million (around 1.18 billion Thai Baht), should they fail to restrict youth accounts as mandated, reported BBC. The new rules aim to enforce rigorous age verification and compliance strategies, ensure existing accounts are shut down, and prevent new creations. Detailed plans on the ban’s implementation are expected to be formally introduced to federal parliament imminently. Adapted by ASEAN Now from BBC 2025-07-30
