webfact Posted October 21, 2018 Share Posted October 21, 2018 Senate selection committee not yet formed BANGKOK, 22 October 2018 (NNT) – The National Council for Peace and Order (NCPO) hasn’t yet appointed a senate selection committee, according to Deputy Prime Minister Wissanu Krea-ngam. Wissanu said members of the upper house will be divided into three groups. The first group comprised of six individuals, will be appointed by the NCPO. While the second group is made up of 50 individuals from 20 professional groups. The second group will be elected through a cross-voting system, in line with the 2018 Organic Election of Senators Act. Slated to take place before January 2nd, 2019, the election of 50 Senators from among 200 shortlisted candidates will be supervised by the Election Commission of Thailand. The names of 50 Senators must be submitted to the NCPO by February 9th, 15 days before the general election. The third group, which will be composed of 194 senators, will be handpicked by a 9-12 member committee to be appointed by the NCPO. The Senate will be missing the active duty military Senators who will get paid as Senators and as soldiers with permanent excuse to be absent from the Senate.
