New York witches aim hex at Supreme Court's Brett Kavanaugh despite death threats

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Melissa Madara was not surprised to receive death threats on Friday as her Brooklyn witchcraft store prepared to host a public hexing of newly confirmed U.S. Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh this weekend.

The planned casting of an anti-Kavanaugh spell, one of the more striking instances of politically disgruntled Americans turning to the supernatural when frustrated by democracy, has drawn backlash from some Christian groups but support from like-minded witch covens.

"It gives the people who are seeking agency a little bit of chance to have that back," Madara said. The ritual was scheduled to be livestreamed on Facebook and Instagram at 8 p.m. EDT on Saturday (1200 GMT Sunday).

Seated at a desk phone among bird skulls and crystal balls at Catland Books, the occult shop she co-owns, Madara said the Kavanaugh hex is expected to be the most popular event the store has hosted since its 2013 opening, including spells aimed at President Donald Trump. Madara declined to provide details of what the latest ritual will entail.

More than 15,000 people who have seen Catland Books promotions on Facebook have expressed interest in attending the event, vastly exceeding the shop's 60-person capacity.

Not everyone is a witchcraft fan. Madara said she had fielded numerous irate calls from critics, with at least one threatening violence.

“Every time we host something like this there’s always people who like to call in with death threats or read us scripture," she said.

As far as supporters go, some are sexual assault survivors still angry that the U.S. Senate confirmed Kavanaugh's lifetime appointment to the nation's highest court despite accusations that he had sexually assaulted multiple women.

Kavanaugh has denied the allegations, and an FBI investigation failed to corroborate his accusers' accounts.

Democrats hope lingering outrage over Kavanaugh, particularly among women, will translate into election gains for them on Nov. 6.

Republicans are likewise trying to seize on anger among conservatives at how they perceive Kavanaugh was mistreated.

Believers in mysticism on both sides of the political divide are taking matters into their own hands.

Plans for the Catland Books event have sparked "counter hexes" around the country by those seeking to undo the spell that the Brooklyn witches cast against Kavanaugh, Madara said.

Even mainstream clergy was joining the fray. Rev. Gary Thomas of the Diocese of San Jose in California said on Friday that he would include Kavanaugh in his prayers at Saturday mass.

Due process played no part in Kavanaugh’s appoitment.

The appointment fulfilled the requirements of the FBI, The Senate, And SCOTUS.

Of course they didn't ask the green haired fat ladies chanting end men, but no one knows what that process requires.

EThe Senate were denied access to 95% of the documentation relating to Kavanaugh’s public service.

The FBI inquiry was under terms written by the White House.

The whole process was rigged.

I don't know if rigged is the correct word; but it was definitely railroaded through without proper investigation and consideration.

Bouillabaisse a la Shakespeare:

Round about the cauldron go;
In the poison'd entrails throw.
Toad, that under cold stone
Days and nights has thirty-one
Swelter'd venom sleeping got,
Boil thou first i' the charmed pot.

Double, double, toil and trouble;
Fire burn, and cauldron bubble.

Fillet of a fenny snake,
In the cauldron boil and bake;
Eye of newt and toe of frog,
Wool of bat and tongue of dog,
Adder's fork and blind-worm's sting,
Lizard's leg and howlet's wing,
For a charm of powerful trouble,
Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.

Double, double, toil and trouble;
Fire burn and cauldron bubble.

Scale of dragon, tooth of wolf,
Witches' mummy, maw and gulf
Of the ravin'd salt-sea shark,
Root of hemlock digg'd i' the dark,
Liver of blaspheming Jew,
Gall of goat, and slips of yew
Silver'd in the moon's eclipse,
Nose of Turk and Tartar's lips,
Finger of birth-strangled babe

Ditch-deliver'd by a drab,
Make the gruel thick and slab:
Add thereto a tiger's chaudron,
For the ingredients of our cauldron.

Double, double, toil and trouble;
Fire burn and cauldron bubble.

Cool it with a baboon's blood,
Then the charm is firm and good.

(now, where did I put that thrice-damned "scale of dragon"?)

Hmmm, if there are those who defend their right to pray that their "god" support The Donald", well, I suppose it is only equal treatment that others should be able to pray to their "powers" to fulfill their wishes. Unless, you want to declare that one belief is superior to another in the U.S. (events refer to the U.S.)

Ironically, the witches are caught up in group-think hysteria - the likes of which saw them burnt as witches in medieval times. Perhaps the Dems' are feeding them poisonous rye bread?*

Actually it was the people burning witches that historians think might have consumed hallucinogens.  Kind of makes you wonder what was in the punch at those Trump rallies.

A few years ago a rather famous Lebanese astrologist whose TV programs were watched by some Saudis on satellite TV was recognised and arrested by the religious police during one of his travels to Mecca and sentenced to death for witchcraft. Hardly believable, not sure he was executed following the general outcry that provoked.

Your guys were the ones on the witch hunt recently.

But you get a cookie for the mandatory non sequitur to Trump.

Part of the problem is the so called religious right (many know nothing about spirituality nor do their lives reflect any sort of higher belief) has sold their souls by hitching their political agenda to Trump. Falwell even went as far as calling him a man of good moral character. Either that is sheer delusion, an alternate universe or simply PR. Nobody in their right mind could ever refer to Trump as that with a straight face.

The Krazy Kav hearings were rigged. A decision was made before the hearings even started. He is not of the temperament nor the character for the highest court, and the nation was again diminished by his selection.

Way to go Trump. Moving America backwards daily. Give it two more weeks Mr. Lame Duck. The people will speak.

What a circus kinda like the sham fbi investigation

You mean like the one that investigated Hillary? You do know that JudicialWatch found three more classified documents that were not supposed to be routed through her server, right?

I mean are speaking of witches, after all. Happy Halloween!

Stupid thing to do.  All it accomplishes is it riles up the evangelicals before the midterm elections.  Evangelicals would support Satan if he promised to appoint anti-abortion judges.

They did!

I beg your pardon? Don't be giving Mrs baboon any more ideas as she prepares breakfast and scowls in my direction...

Interesting, as people turn to magic when they feel they don't understand, have no say in, or control over, a situation; a bit like amulets in Thailand (which mostly takes the place of road safety), or on a broader scale, any religion you care to mention.
