The Anti-Corruption Organization of Thailand (ACT), a non-governmental agency that campaigns against graft, is fully supportive of the ruling of the National Anti-Corruption Commission (NACC) that requires the chairs and members of university councils to declare their assets and liabilities.

ACT secretary-general Mana Nimitmongkol on Sunday lauded the ruling but urged the NACC to have a dialogue with members of the university council and their chairs to find out their concerns that make them reluctant to disclose their assets and liabilities.

While praising most university council members of being good men and successful in their careers, Mana pointed out that there have been occasional cases of alleged corruption in universities implicating the management as well as some university council chairs.

Yet another regulation in the land of special committees, that can and will be subjectively applied, depending on who it is concerned and how high their sphere of influence circulates.

Asset declarations are a great idea in societies that practice the rule of law. However, given Thai culture and the huge portion of the Thai economy which is 'black' and/or unreported, you can't really say that Thailand practices the proverbial 'Rule of Law'.

A good idea in theory, but in the Kingdom it is the equivalent of trying to plug a square peg in a round hole.

And, by the way, this policy would require the wide-spread trust of the NACC.

Anyone want to step forward and declare their trust in the NACC?

Anyone?

Anyone?

what is 'occasional' ? regardless, this tempest-in-a-teapot illustrates the general thai stance toward law; 'it is for everyone but me'

Only 'occasional' and 'alleged' because there has been no real effort made to investigate corruption at this level of society. Laws like this are badly needed but unfortunately if a problem with someones asset declaration is just passed to the NACC then we all know that inaction will be the result.

Lots of worthy comments above.  There is one law for the poor; no law for the rich.  The gap widens every minute, of every day in Thailand.

......the world over, actually.

perhaps first you need to lead by example old fiddy watches himself ought just submit to the law and admit to being a corrupt gnarly old limp member

also lets have declaration by the dictator on how his financial situation has prospered from dictatorship

Universities are going to be in the firing line as the junta advances it's agenda. Better get the management under their thumb to make sure no pesky students get any funky ideas.
