Arrest warrant issued for Bangkok New Year's Eve bombing suspect

BANGKOK: -- The Thai court has issued an arrest warrant for a man suspected of involvement in the coordinated bombings in Bangkok and Nonthaburi on New Year's Eve 2006.

Footage of a surveillance camera at a gold shop in Saphan Khwai, one of nine locations where bomb blasts occurred, showed a suspect aged between 25-30 years old.

Deputy National Police Chief Pol. Lt-Gen Jongrak Juthanont in his capacity as deputy head of the investigation team earlier submitted evidence and filed a motion to the courts.

The evidence is to be submitted to acting national police chief Gen. Sereepisut Temiyaves on Monday and the picture of the suspect will be published to trace him.

Gen. Jongrak said he was confident that the police will be able to bring the suspect to justice, finally.

Three persons died while 42, including nine foreigners, were wounded in the series of blasts which shattered Bangkok's holiday spirit on last year's New Year Eve, Dec. 31, 2006.

The explosions took place as Bangkokians were celebrating the upcoming New Year. It was not immediately clear if the bombs had anything to do with the military coup of September 19 that ousted premier Thaksin Shinawatra, or with the continuing insurgency violence in the Muslim-predominant southern border region which has left more than 1,900 people dead since 2004.
