Uni student accepts 10,000 baht as police just fine "pervert" for bus molestation

A university student who was repeatedly molested on a Bangkok bus took pity on her attacker and refused to press charges. 

 

He had grabbed her breasts and fondled her legs. She scratched him and drew blood and a fight broke out.

 

But she kept the full details of what happened from the cops. Later she told Sanook what actually happened on Route 104 from Mor Chit to Pak Kret.

 

The man - a father of two - was let go with a fine while the victim got 10,000 baht compensation. 

 

Sanook reported that they spoke to the conductress on the route called Thitima, 29. She said that the victim and the man were sitting four rows from the back. 

 

Suddenly at The Mall, Ngam Wongwan, she heard the woman say that there was a pervert on the bus and to call police. 

 

She saw red stains on the woman's shirt and thigh and the man's wrist was bleeding. 

 

The driver closed the doors and with the help of a security guard at the shopping center the police were called.

 

The victim - Namwan Banjamaporn - used her Facebook page to warn other women. She said danger is everywhere; don't just play on your phone thinking it won't happen to you.

 

Later she told Sanook in graphic detail what happened to her. Details that she did not share with the police.

 

She said she was going home and had got on the bus at Mo Chit BTS. The man got on at Major Ratchayothin, she thought, and sat next to her. 

 

He began by nudging her with his elbow. This progressed to him putting his hand on her breasts, knee and thigh as he tried to get her to go and have dinner with him then go to his house. 

 

She refused his advances then scratched him to try and make him stop. Then she called out for help.

 

When she drew blood on his wrist this only seemed to make him more determined. He liked it, she said. 

 

But when the police came she found out that the man had two young children and took pity on him. 

 

She accepted 10,000 baht compensation. 

 

Police said that a 35 year old man called Jakrapong from Pak Kret had been fined and released after the female in the case refused to press charges.

It's this woman's prerogative to do as she pleases when it comes to not pressing charges. But by not pressing charges, I feel she's doing a huge disservice to other women. She should be pressing charges and the police should be making an example of this man. Send a strong and clear message that this isn't acceptable behaviour.

I think if this story gets into the Thai language stream then he had better hide all the knives in the house.....Why does Thailand not set up a sex offenders register..........please don't bother to answer that, it was a rhetorical question.....

Yes, And you?  Where you confused by my reference to Thailand's acceptance of molestation, in which there are no plans to put in any preventive measures such as increased policing or moral instruction in government schools to make it clear it is unacceptable behavior. <removed>

Another predator let loose without facing real punishment. No wonder this crap never ceases.

Someone who would do this on a bus is likely to reoffend later in a quieter spot in a far worse manner.

 

The police are a disgrace for not following this up properly.

Pak Kret...Mon? Feelings of inferiority, took a chance that didn't pan out...perhaps drunk?

10,000 baht is a lot of money for a Uni student so I am not surprised she did not press charges.

Compensation should be a side issue with no influence on whether charges should be filed if there are collaborating witnesses/physical evidence - to protect potential victims in the future. Years ago in the west, if domestic violence victims didn't press charges due to fear the perpetrators were not charged. Those laws were changed so that even if the victim didn't sign a complaint, if there was evidence of the violence (blood, bruising) the assailant was charged regardless. This is what needs to occur here especially with sex crimes, due to the proclivity of repeated offences with these types of criminals. The victim here, either influenced by the cash or sentimentality, just put other woman in potential danger. It should not be up to some young student to decide criminality, this is why the judicial system is supposedly in place. Major changes are needed to protect woman more in this country, for they are the backbone of Thailand. 

Fined without being charged or convicted? So that money just goes to the police for sorting it out, plus a percentage of the compensation I am sure. No need to put the courts or lawyers to any trouble or share of the proceeds.

I wonder what excuses he has for the scratches. If it was me, I'd claim a bar fight by young thugs.
