However, the total funding requests from ministries have exceeded 400 billion baht, raising concerns about transparency and the potential for projects to serve electoral or specific group interests. The Commerce Ministry, having initially requested 3 billion baht, faced reductions during the preliminary review. Final allocations are still pending for approved projects from the Department of Foreign Trade (DFT) and the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP). The DFT's projects, totalling 27 million baht, focus on alleviating impacts from US tariffs, including supporting entrepreneurs with product origin certification and consulting legal experts to defend against US countervailing duties. In line with these efforts, the DITP is planning to allocate part of its budget to assist exporters in exploring new markets as a strategy to mitigate risks from evolving US policies. Poj Aramwattananont, Chairman of the Thai Chamber of Commerce, has praised these initiatives, emphasizing the critical role of exports, which contribute 60% to Thailand’s GDP. He highlighted the need to sustain export levels to minimize negative economic repercussions. Poj also recommended enhanced funding for the tourism sector, which aims to attract 35 million foreign visitors this year by improving safety perceptions and adapting tourism products to meet changing demands. Additionally, the Industry Ministry's request for further funding for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) is supported by Sangchai Theerakulwanich, President of the Federation of Thai SMEs. The ministry is seeking 1 billion baht from the stimulus budget to boost SME productivity. Industry Minister Akanat Promphan plans to enhance SMEs' production technology and provide financial assistance to about 10,000 enterprises, alongside efforts to combat illegal foreign businesses impacting local manufacturers. In the realm of digital infrastructure, the Digital Economy and Society Ministry has proposed enhancements to the Anti-Online Crime Operation Centre, while Thailand Post aims to improve its PostMart channel to support SMEs in online trading. The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) has earmarked 2.5 billion baht for its "Entertainment Hub" project, intended to support international concerts and music festivals. Interestingly, the Energy Ministry has opted not to request funds for new infrastructure projects under the stimulus measures. This decision was confirmed by an energy official in a statement to the Bangkok Post, noting that state-owned entities, such as the Electricity Generating Authority of Thailand (EGAT) and PTT Plc, will continue with their projects using internal budgets. The overarching goal of the stimulus budget is to promote employment, infrastructure, community development, tourism, and technology-driven economic development. The Tourism and Sports Ministry, for instance, has proposed enhancing the infrastructure by building and redeveloping public toilets at tourist sites. As decisions unfold, stakeholders remain keenly focused on ensuring that the funds are utilized effectively and transparently to drive economic growth and sustainability.
