Ex-Pheu Thai MP accused of murder can run in polls: EC

A FORMER Pheu Thai Party MP, wanted in connection with the alleged murder of a local administrator in Khon Kaen, cannot be prohibited by law from contesting in the upcoming election, a senior election official said yesterday.

Apinan Chan-uppala, director of the Election Commission (EC)’s Khon Kaen office, pointed out that the province’s former MP Nawat Tohcharoensuk has not been convicted or jailed for a criminal offence.

The current Constitution, in effect since April last year, prohibits anybody convicted or those who have been out of prison for less than 10 years from contesting in an election.

“There has been no final court verdict in his case, so he is still eligible to contest,” the official said.

Nawat is fighting a lawsuit that accuses him of being the mastermind behind the murder of Khon Kaen Provincial Administrative Organisation’s chief administrator Suchart Kotthum in 2013. An arrest warrant was issued against the former MP in April.

Separately, Nawat allegedly assaulted a party colleague at a recent Pheu Thai Party meeting held to select election candidates.

He supposedly got upset and kicked a fellow party member, who was expected to replace him as a Pheu Thai candidate in his home province of Khon Kaen.

The colleague, Thanik Maseepitak, who was reportedly at the receiving end of Nawat’s anger, declined to comment on the matter yesterday, saying it was the party’s internal affair.

“It’s a matter within our family. The party’s seniors are already taking care of it,” he said.

Nawat could not be reached for comment yesterday either, but Thanawin Phanthunaso, who looks after the politician’s house in Khon Kaen’s Nong Rua district, said he did not believe allegations of his boss assaulting a colleague.

“He is very kind to me,” he said.

Just the right candidate for Thaksin then.

How about former and exiled PT PMs accused of most everything?

Allowed to throw their hats in the ring as well?

'Tis the character make up and history of most local Puu Yai and Moobaan/Tambon Councils.

Few pay attention to real local politics, which is the base for most everything.

Shows the state of politics in Thailand....there's been an arrest warrant issued and served....and the case is now in the court......

He's nothing short of a gangster....so suited for Thai politics!

What do you suggest then ? not allowing anyone under investigation to run. That opens a whole set of new problems where people can pay the police to investigate politicians (even if not guilty) so they can't run in the election ?

I understand how this looks, it looks real bad but until someone is found guilty and is convicted you can't already punish them. The guy could be innocent (not that I think he is but that is up to the judges).

Does show the quality of PTP and former PTP politicians. Same with that PTP politician that shot his wife and could not be arrested as long as parliament was in session. Thai politics is full of creatures like this and then they call it a democracy.

This demonstrates the typical PTP candidate, this is who they want in their party. No interest in improving the lot of their countrymen, only in enriching themselves. One would hope that they would be looking for people that have an interest in the environment, education and independence from billionaires with self serving goals.

In a fairness the Democrat politicians from the south are no better, but as the poster above mentions, this is the type of democracy everyone is fighting hard for ????

I bet the Bangkok elite will be seeing red!!

True, there are many many examples of this all over the country and like this for at least decades.

IMHO what's even sadder, this scenario surely frightens / discourages the good guys from getting involved.

And their current national election campaign leader the best example of all, a pure nasty ruthless thug and his sons and their minders also - the chalerm gang.

Plus at a recent large pt faithful meeting they proclaimed chalerm as a superstar - shows their inner thought and motives also.

Also who selected chalerm for this role? There's only one answer to that - the convicted and fled felon living in dubai. Shows his low life morals also.

Plus sonny boy oak now also proclaimed as a national pt election campaign champion, but he won't be saying much. What father in their right mind would want their son (or any family member) strongly associated with chalerm?

Thailand just a land of sub standard and corrupt politicians. That will level the playing field.

And there are still people on this forum proclaiming the PTP is the champion of Democracy. With choices like (having a crook like Charlem as their main man)  this they are as bad as the junta. Not that other parties are much better, the whole system is a sham masked to look like a Democracy while in reality its an ongoing fight to be in control of the treasury to siphon as much money for their own gain. The voters are just pawns a means to an end.

There is no ideology that is supported, the mass defections prove that. They all just look for their best chance to get to the money. No wonder the Thais don't want to rise up against the junta for democracy as they all know that they will shed blood for getting an other group of new thugs in power to replace the old thugs. Nothing ever changes till the money is taken out of politics, and guess what those who have the power or those fighting for the power will never make those changes, because that would make it pointless for them to get in power as all they are after is money.

Until better choices are available and the people support those better choices nothing will change. The old parties and junta are all bad they all had chances to change but none ever did.

Well what else can he say about the man who pays his wages and perhaps provides his housekeeper's lodgings, too? Hardly a relevant comment, considering the seriousness of the point at issue.

And why not, the majority of others running are crims anyway, so what's the difference.

Exactly.

One might question as to the validity and bias of the source and promotions of this nature.

Why bring such attention to the obvious hypocrisy?
