A couple of years ago while submitting my paperwork for my annual Marriage Extension the Immigration official looked at my Income Affidavit and said do a Retirement Extension instead. She then discarded most of the pile of paperwork I had presented and proceeded to grant the extension based on retirement qualifications. Now that Income Affidavits aren’t being offered by the various consulates (American in my case) I would like switch back to the Marriage Extension rather than tie up 800,000 and just show proof for 400k. My question: Can I just show up on my Retirement Extension renewal date and hand over paperwork for a Marriage Extension instead? OR are there steps I must complete beforehand?

That is all you need to do. Of course you wife will have to be with you when you do the application.

I would apply a full 30-days before your current extension expires, so you can deal with any potential document-issues which might arise.  In some offices, it is more difficult to get marriage-based extensions processed now, than it was a couple years ago.
