A world muay thai champion was found hanged in her room at a boarding house near her university in Ratchaburi’s Mueang district yesterday morning, police said on Tuesday.

Police were alerted after Nitiyaporn Srisalai, 22, was found hanging from a nylon rope attached to the door frame at the back of the room, in Moo 5 village in Tambon Don Tako.

Police did not find any trace of foul play, but there was a half-finished bottle of whisky in the room.

Nitiyaporn was a fourth-year student at Rajabhat University, Moo Ban Jom Bueng, majoring in muay thai.

She was well-known through her muay thai alias as Hong Khao of Rajabhat Moo Ban Jom Bueng.

She first became a World Muay Thai Organisation champion in the 51-kilogram category, before going on to winning the title in the 52kg category.

Nitiyaporn’s friends told police that they had been drinking with her at 8pm on Sunday night, before returning to their rooms.

One of the friends called on her the following morning, but she did not answer persistent knocks on the door.

They asked the owner of the boarding house to open the door with a spare key, only to find the body.

Charnchai Yommadit, president of the International Muay Thai Study Association, said on Tuesday that Nitiyaporn had been a highly capable muay thai boxer and her death was a great loss to the sport.

Nitiyaporn’s parents were divorced and she had had to earn her own living and pay for her studies by boxing, he added.

Drinking and a champion fighter?  Is that part of the normal Muay Thai training?  Given the money that gets bet on those fights, I can only guess and imagine, how much corruption, fixed fights, and what not goes on.  It would not surprise me one bit if she had been approached or pressured to do some match fixing

Wow, so being asked to throw a fight or two causes suicide, guess we a learn something new everyday.

How can you hang yourself from a door frame (not speculating!)? Isn't that too low? Unless, of course, she was extremely short...

What a terrible way to go. Way too young to die. RIP

That's not how hanging works. You don't need your feet off the floor.

Many hang from door knobs . Get on knees, apply forward pressure away from door until passing out and gravity takes care of the test

Absolutely.  have you ever been to a muay thai fight?  have you ever seen the betting action?  And that is just the small stuff that is visible

The only time I went to one there were senior looking monks there betting on matches!

Most Thai girls are not as tall as a door frame... !

Sympathy for her, aged 22, living alone, trying to finish University at her own expense, pay for her room & daily needs as well as working as a fighter to find the money!!

Pressure must have got to her, shame she couldn't confide in her friends for a little more support!

Rest in peace "young one".

It's just a matter of wanting to end your life and you are serious about it.  It's not that uncommon for people in jails/prisons to hang themselves using a stainless steel, wall mounted toilet/sink apparatus where the anchor point is only 18in/45cm off of the floor.  They are almost laying down yet manage to hang themselves using either a sheet or sweatshirt.

I'm afraid that I have to jump in here.

Even the toughest fighter in the world is capable of being bullied.  Sometimes to a point where suicide is the only alternative.  We see this daily on Facebook etc..

It is highly possible that this child was told that if she didn't throw the fight or whatever, that her parents or even her own child would be murdered.  The only way out of a situation like that is to neck yourself.  Then it all goes away, otherwise it doesn't.

You may well be correct about the bullying aspect, however was that the intention of the OP to which I was replying - I didn't gleam that from the post.

Michael Hutchence of Inxs managed it, as have many others.

This is probably the most accurate comment that will be in this thread.

Its a dirt sport with loads of money and corruption surrounding it. You’re talking about a sport that allows children to literally beat each other  to a bloody mess and sometimes even death, while bets are placed and the crowd cheers on. This of course happens in a bully society that devalues women and places money above all else.

One look at their prostitution and human trafficking track record in addition to the vile reality of this barbaric sport, and her being bullied to death doesn’t seem so far fetched. Human life is not valued here. Money is.

6 years here. Stopped due to an injury. It’s a filthy sport with some of the scummiest human beings I’ve ever encountered. Looking back now I honestly don’t know where my head was at.

I know enough. Not saying that IS what happened but I wouldn’t be surprised if it were the case. Checking out would be more honorable than what she might have been bullied to do. This is Thailand, if you’re not aware of how things really work here, then I feel for you.

Young sporting champion at university, with the future outlook being so good in general, is highly unlikely to just top themselves unless there is some previous/present evidence of serious mental problems (which isn't here in this case). This case is highly suspicious in a fair few ways. Commenting more would be speculative but many things wouldn't be far from the realms of possibility on many fronts here considering the dark opaqueness of sporting reality in this land.

To me, doesn't pass the smell test.
