Man tried for insulting, threatening to kill King

Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday tried a chicken vendor for insulting and threatening to kill King Norodom Sihamoni in a Facebook post in June. Judge Theam Chanpiseth identified the accused as Eang Chulsar, 26, living in Chamkar Mon district.

 

He said the accused was charged with insulting the King and also issuing a death threat, noting he faces at least five years in jail if convicted. “He publicly posted photos of His Majesty King Norodom Sihamoni and the Queen on his Facebook account,” Judge Chanpiseth said. “He posted messages which insulted the King and threatened to kill him.”

 

“What were the reasons behind your post and why did you want to kill the King?” the judge asked Mr Chulasar in court yesterday. The accused merely mumbled that he had been high on drugs but did not elaborate.
