Embassy in Thailand slams fake news about migrant workers

Featured Replies

The Cambodian embassy in Thailand on Friday clarified that the more than 50 migrant workers who returned to the Kingdom through the border in Poipet city last week were not fired by a factory but were in fact working illegally and returned home to get required documents.

In a statement, the embassy responded to a Facebook post under the account of Chhum Vean Khmer which claimed that the workers returned to Cambodia on Wednesday because they were sacked by their Thai employer. The embassy said it regretted the false information. It said that after getting information about the post, it sent its labour attaché to the factory in Thailand’s Chonburi province to check on the issue on Thursday.

“In fact in November, 32 Cambodians working in that factory had filed a petition with the embassy requesting for help to get passports and other documents because the employer told them they could not work illegally and told them to return to work after getting the required documents,” it said. The embassy added that 28 of them asked for temporary travel documents to return to Cambodia.
