BANGKOK, 26th December 2018 (NNT) – Permanent Secretary for Interior Chatchai Promlert has announced a "No Gifts” policy for the New Year celebrations 2019 in order to create an anti-corruption culture among officials at the Ministry of the Interior.

The announcement is in line with the Organic Act on Counter Corruption B.E. 2561 (2018) and the National Reform Plan on Anti-Corruption and Misconduct, 2018 -2022.

Chatchai said that the Ministry of the Interior attaches great importance to the fight against corruption and malfeasance. Aware of the corruption problem, the ministry has instigated the "Clean Ministry of the Interior” program on a continuing basis, with an emphasis on promoting good governance at all levels.

In this regard, he said the ministry has called on all executives of its departments and state enterprises, provincial governors, and the Bangkok Governor, as well as other personnel, to decline gifts offered during the New Year festive season.

Greeting cards should be given or sent through online media to replace the offer of gifts. This will help promote the fight against corruption and misconduct, while reducing opportunities for bribery among state officials.

At the same time, the No Gifts policy will promote the social value of savings, in accordance with the Sufficiency Economy Philosophy. It will also set a good example for public administration and for the Ministry of the Interior's personnel, who are encouraged to work with honesty and accountability.

You can put lipstick on a pig...……………...but it's still a pig!

Is it still OK to borrow stuff from friends? I dunno, watches, perhaps?

First no tips at immigration, now no gifts at the interior ministry. At this rate, no one will want to work in government anymore.

The fact that governmental institutions have to undertake such drastic measures as this really speaks volumes about the Thai psyche. Every single aspect of life here is defined by how much money one can get from another. It's sad beyond words and totally hopeless, no matter how many signs the top brass put up to deter their staff - corruption will always be a part of their lives.

Wasn't Anupong something to do with the Interior Ministry? And didn't he have something to do with Rajabhati Park (apologies if I got the spelling wrong).

They obviously attach very great importance to the fight against corruption then...

I don't recall any attempts by any of the previous governments I've seen here. Hope they're serious and successful.

Wow, following the old thai tradition the child probably got a new name.

They had a gift register but someone gave it away.

confused official: "Sir, Sir,... are 'bribes' still OK?"

Serious is a very serious word in Thailand, be careful how you use it.

The no-gift policy should run both ways.  When the government gives 'gifts to the people' it is simply a form of populist vote buying and another form of soft-corruption.

Can one gift be exempted - Prayut abstaining from continuing his position as PM throughout 2019?

You have a short memory. Yingluck had a very public anti-corruption campaign. It obviously failed. Actually, she was chased out. Perhaps the powers that be chased her out for that very reason.

we've still got "donations" though so no panic yet for the officials!!

So the Christmas Day"gift" of medical cannabis to the people is not really a gift?
