Nine sex workers, including two 16-year-old girls and four 17-year-olds, were rounded up at a karaoke bar in Samut Prakan’s Bang Sao Thong district on Thursday night.

Administrative officials led by an Interior Ministry-assigned task force raided the bar after an anti-human trafficking non-governmental organisation complained that it might be providing underage prostitution services.

The 8.30pm raid also led to the arrest of bar owners Jariya Phusua, 42 and Mongkolchai Pornrattanakul, 46 for operating without a proper licence. Officials have also passed their files to the police to investigate if the couple should also charged with human trafficking.

The under-18 girls were separated and sent for protection and rehabilitation under the wing of the Social Development and Human Security Ministry.

Thai government and police are to lazy to check anything only sit waiting for a tip

There are only two people doing anything to uphold the law in Thailand. Mr. Tipoff and Big Joke. The rest of the RTP are just along for the ride and to help fund the Policeman's Ball.

Karaoke- one of the most hideous forms of torture ever devised by mankind.

You presumably haven't heard the singing Xmas/New Year guest DJ in our local dance venue club, karaoke would be a relief...????

And apparently, this place operating without a license and with underage prostitutes all this time without drawing any notice from the local police... Wonder why?

In the halcyon days when UK police had more officers/time, each division held records of all licensed premises and routinely visited each of them at least monthly. Nowhere would have been allowed to operate without a licence. The grant of that licence was subject not only to background checks of the licensee by the police, but also a fire precautions and evacuation check by the fire brigade.

But that was in a country where the main aim of the police was to be a public service helping and protecting people, not doing only jobs that made a profit for themselves.

Yes, many of the customers really shoudn't sing in public. But I like these places compared to the VIP places that rip off tourists with outrageous bills.

90% of the time raided bars have no license. How difficult would it be for a license check to be conducted every 6 months?

Really hard if the bar owner has been keeping up his monthly protection payments to the mafia, police, etc.

Even by Thai standards that is a CREEPY photo! That guy facing us looks like he's about to do something unspeakable, giddy with glee over the prospect.

You took the words out of my mouth

Maybe Creepy is not a strong enough description
