The world held its breath in June and July as a international team of specialists helped guide each of the 12 youngster and their coach out after their exit was blocked by a flash flood. Richard Stanton, 56, and John Volanthen, 46, who were the first divers to reach the children, have been awarded the George Medal, the second highest civilian gallantry award, announced alongside the New Year Honours list. Elon Musk will have his nose out of place at Vern Unsworth being awarded an MBE. Thailand for their part in recognising their bravery and rescue effort handed out certificates and medals and free flights to Thailand for life on Thai Airways.
