The British divers who helped rescue a football team trapped in a cave in Thailand have been recognised in the New Year Honours list for their bravery.

The world held its breath in June and July as a international team of specialists helped guide each of the 12 youngster and their coach out after their exit was blocked by a flash flood.

Richard Stanton, 56, and John Volanthen, 46, who were the first divers to reach the children, have been awarded the George Medal, the second highest civilian gallantry award, announced alongside the New Year Honours list.

Well deserved.

It is great that the UK has acknowledged their bravery. Elon Musk will have his nose out of place at Vern Unsworth being awarded an MBE.

Thailand for their part in recognising their bravery and rescue effort handed out certificates and medals and free flights to Thailand for life on Thai Airways. Problem being that Thai Airways will probably die long before they do.

I thought it was only one free flight and the Elite card for 5 years, whatever!

Whatever they get they fully deserve it

They officially say "free travel TO Thailand for life". They don't say anything about free return tickets.

yeah! don't expect free return on Elon's Mach1 HyperLoop, if it ever gets built...

The Australian bloke was named South Australian of the year and is in line for Australian of the Year but is up againct some pretty tough competition with an Ingigineous person, a paraplegic sportsman and a womens rights activist.
