SAO PAULO (Reuters) - Brazil's far-right President-elect Jair Bolsonaro said on Saturday he plans to issue a decree allowing all Brazilians without criminal records to own firearms, welcome news to many core supporters who want him to loosen Brazil's strict gun laws.

Throughout his campaign, Bolsonaro had pledged to dismantle Brazil's current gun legislation, which presents various bureaucratic and legal obstacles for people seeking to purchase firearms. That message appealed to many Brazilians who want to use guns for self-defense amid sky-high levels of violent crime.

"By decree, we plan to guarantee the ownership of firearms by citizens without criminal records," Bolsonaro, who takes office on Jan. 1, wrote on Twitter on Saturday.

He did not provide additional details and it was not immediately clear what mechanisms Bolsonaro would have at his disposal to carry out such a decree, or what specific measures the decree would contain. Brazil's Congress is already discussing measures to loosen gun control laws.

Gun manufacturers are among those that stand to benefit from such moves. Shares in Brazilian gun maker Taurus Armas SA have climbed some 88 percent year-to-date amid expectations that Bolsonaro would win the election and follow through on promises to liberalize gun laws.

I hope more countries follow suit. Law abiding citizens should have the right to protect themselves against criminals. Britain doesn't allow its citizens such rights, has more CCTV coverage than any other nation but it's police can't deal with the rising violent crime. Soft liberal punishments, over stretched police on the ground, a focus on some crimes at the expense of others, and a real reluctance to get involved with minorities for fear of political admonishment, means the UK is now a dangerous place for it's own citizens.

Focusing on Brazil -

Gun violence may well be a national epidemic but, as with income and education, the toll is borne unevenly in a country fractured by class, race, age and gender. In Brazil, as in most countries, homicide is a young man’s disease, and one where both victims and perpetrators are disproportionately black and poor -- a problem that a one-size-fits-all gun law can’t resolve.

Good governance and public trust are key to disarming Rio's dangerous streets.

The nation is already flooded by firearms, no thanks to in part cross-border crime cartels and crooked cops who feed the black market.

Bolsonaro isn't doing this to protect people. He's doing it to encourage the extrajudicial killing of as many of Brazil's criminal underclass as possible.

When that happens it saves the police, the courts, and the jails from doing the jobs they are paid to do.

If they go down that route it's really hard to turn back from that. It's their choice. They elected a fascist and now they will reap the consequences.

If they kill Brazil's criminal underclass doesn't that protect the people who are not the criminal underclass?

FAR WORSE is the fact, that he basically gave the green light for total deforestation of the Amazon Rain-Forest.

That's an excellent point that I didn't even consider.

Thanks for that little bit of insight.

Have to take into account the guy represents the far right. Armed citizens can always be organised to form the tools of oppression against opposition / critics. Which countries can actually demonstrate the net benefit of armed citizens to suppress high crime rates? - None?

No mention of the part played by Theresa May ( as Home Secretary ) and later as PM reducing the number of police officers by  21,000?

The UK is not, despite your hyperbole, a ‘dangerous place’.

In the process of deforestation, no doubt some of those guns will be used to kill off the indigenous people who have lived there forever.

They can also be organized to be instruments of it. As in the case of the United States.
