Phnom Penh Municipal Court yesterday acquitted a Chinese businessman accused of murdering his friend in 2016 in Meanchey district in order to steal $5,000. Cheng Xiao Jun, the Chinese businessman, was charged with premeditated murder and was facing a life sentence.

“Based on the result of the trial and after the judge’s council has completely questioned the accused, as well as reviewed CCTV footage and other evidence, the court has found the accused not guilty,” Judge Pich Vicheathor said. “The court orders the chief of CC1 [prison] to immediately release the accused as he was not involved in this criminal case.”

Colonel Kong Kosal, a correctional officer at Prey Sar prison, yesterday said Mr Cheng has been released from prison. “He has been released from prison,” Col Kosal said. “His family picked him up and brought him home.”
