Video: Lucky escape for "song thaew" passengers as container comes loose

10pm.jpg

Dash cam footage from Thailand's south showed a container truck come out of a side turning and overturn.

Only the quick actions of  the driver of a  song thaew (public pick-up bus) averted disaster.

The container on the 18 wheeler came loose, reported Thai Rath, causing the truck to topple over with its momentum.

The song thaew driver managed to avoid being crushed though he needed to drive into the undergrowth by the side of the road.

Three people were slightly injured.

Some netizens said it was a lucky escape but praised the awareness of the song thaew driver.

But others wondered how the container was secured to the truck.

The accident - posted on Facebook - happened at a three way intersection in Ron Phiboon district of Nakorn Sri Thammarat.

The song thaew was plying the Nakorn Sri Thammarat to Thung Song route.

No mention was made of police involvement in this Thai Rath article.

Well, that's an easy one for us TVF highway accident observers. The container did not break loose from the trailer chassis, but it would seem the operator of the semi truck took the corner way too fast. Result gravity and momentum took over. Luckily no serious injuries.

So 'netizens' cannot see the obvious, obviously? Too much time spent looking at screens I suppose.

Yes, it's obvious to see that the container remains attached to the trailer throughout, so the twist-locks did their job. A combination of too much speed and/or a shifting load was to blame. This one certainly can't be blamed on brake failure, maybe brain failure.

Spent some time working next to a 'large port' that had a lot of container shuttling going on and very bumpy roads. It was quite normal to see fresh air between the containers and the trailers on hitting some of the bumps. Obviously corner locks not turned to save time.

In the video the locks were obviously on.

Last statement was made to avoid being jumped on by certain posters. ????????????

Amazing how that song thaew driver realized that a disaster was in the making and got the freak out of the way. He must possess a sixth sense !

Container driver has "no sense" and probably no job tomorrow.

 - unless Mr SongThaew was already destined for the ditch all by himself? - truck or not...

Notice no other vehicles came through so just to (once) 'join the speculation club' ???? let's throw in 'beat the red light.'

Retards on the road again.

Way beyond the average stupid driver,  this one.

But Thailand has this all down pat.

Good job,  the worst in the world.

And the other not surprising news today.

All Soi dogs may soon get free dental care from the local community.

Nice one.

Nonsense report, the truck took the corner too fast, and rolled, the container did not come loose, still attached to the trailer when it went over,

Quite.

I see the report says, "The container on the 18 wheeler came loose, reported Thai Rath, causing the truck to topple over with its momentum."

It doesn't state where the claim came from, although you'd have to assume (dangerous I know) that it came from the truck driver. Perhaps he didn't have enough time to think of something else, although if it was him quoted, he surprisingly managed to avoid the default setting of "brake failure."

Exactly.

The "momentum" was because it was still attached to the truck. Had it become loose, there wouldn't have been any "momentum" from the container.

Watch the video from the 34 to 36 sec mark, you can see the container slide further away from the tractor (truck).  Interesting to see the result...certainly looks like a severe weight shift as he accelerates to the intersection, and continues as he goes into the corner.
