Laptop Help In Chiang Mai?

Does anyone know where I can head to get my laptop tuned up a little? The power cable isn't fitting as snug as I would like, which is currently extremely problematic, as my battery is kaput. Which leads to my next logical question...

...anyone know where I can get an IBM battery?

I went to Icon Square and was met with blank stares, and I was thinking of heading over to Panthip, but won't bother if it's a waste of time.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

To get a new battery for my ASUS laptop that was stolen (bastards) I had to find the head office of ASUS in Bangkok. Before going there, I spent 2 hours in Panthip Bangkok trying to find a shop that might have it. Not even the number one laptop specialist had it.

Perhaps you could check with D-Computer, who do wholesale and warranty repairs of a lot of electronics equipment.. as they should have the network to order one for you.

Their office is (was? it's been a year since I was there) located on the inner side of the moat, not far from Chang Phueak Gate (but on the opposite side of the moat). Cannot remember the exact address, but hopefully that is enough to go on... or enough for somebody else to post more exact instructions. :o

Meadish, it took me six months to find an Asus battery searching world wide. There was a production problem with the company.

With any battery check the production date, the shelf life is limited.

It seems extremely difficult to find a new laptop battery, mine is dead as well and even in Bangkok, in the very shop that distributes these laptops, they could not get me one...

I noticed recently that there is a battery repair counter in Amorn (the spare parts shop at Icon square ), there was a guy busy dismantling a wireless drill machine battery, I will go with my battery to see if they can chance the cells. My battery is dead anyway so I might as well try. If it works i will come back here to give you the results.

Cheers.

Laptop batteries can be a real pain to find and you may do well to just find someone who is going to da west and is willing to pick one up for you. I am not going to the US until May/June but if you still have a need, let me know.

Ordering one on the internet may work but be advised that both shippers and customs do NOT want batteries being shipped internationally. In fact there are agreements you sometimes have to comply with that you will not be taking/sending this battery to another country. I waited until I got to the US to buy one for my laptop and lugged it all the way over here only to eventually discover that it was made, yup, in Thailand...

Like most things of this nature, there are likely only a few types of batteries manufactured and many different computer companies go with one of those limited choices rather than manufacture their own. Do a search or at the very least, be sure you take your battery with you when you shop Pantip or wherever and just find one that matches in size and connector rather than asking for one for a particular laptop brand/model..

I used to do repairs of all sorts of electronic devices just for fun and for friends/family and found that a lot of basic components are shared through a wide range of brands. For instance VCR recorders were sold by literally dozens of companies but there were only four manufacturers of the innards and each company simply put their own plastic case/brand insignia on one of these units.

Laptop batteries ARE manufactured in Thailand for a wide range of laptop computers. The trick is finding someone who can point you in the right direction...

Good luck, brother

  • 2 weeks later...

The place mentioned above by TA22 is in fact Goodspeed Computer (second floor of Icon) and it is indeed the best place I've found in CM. Neung, the boss there, is the best person to speak to.

In my experience Panthip Plaza up on Changklan has fallen asleep: I can never evoke a flicker of interest there from staff any more. It's like one of those medieval fairy tales where the entire town falls asleep for 100 years. I've given up on it.

If you have a Mac (as I do) you are in the wrong town unhappily. There is a Mac dealer here, but he is breathtakingly incompetent - and admits on the quiet to running a few scams to milk more money out of clients (overcharging, charging for non-existent problems, etc). The last time I left a laptop there it didn't come back "from Bangkok" for EIGHT WEEKS. And that was just to get a quote.

I now take my Mac to Australia for repairs.

Are you serious? I was about to go to them for a minor thing - recalibrate the battery; but had hoped to use them in future as a reliable apple shop. There were commendations for this dealer previously.

I just had my laptop battery resuscitated in a small shop in Pantip plaza called Smart Tech Solutions, 3rd floor, they did a neat job opening and reclosing the battery pack and replaced the 6 cells for a very reasonable price IMO.The guarantee is....1 month... :o The tech at Amorn, near Icon Plaza, was very reluctant to do it.

Just below them on the 2nd floor, the guys at HCW shop offered me a very good assistance to help me revive my Laptop and spent the all afternoon on it (for a fee, but my laptop is working again...)

Hope this helps.Cheers.

Good that you got your battery recharged; it will be interesting to know how long it lasts.

I went to HP's service center here in CM and they had a new battery here for my laptop the next day.

If anyone know who repairs Dell laptops here in CM, please let me know.

Also, several people on here recommended GoodSpeed in the Computer Plaza and I have to say that I am very pleased with their service! They custom-built a CPU for me with a quality motherboard, hot video card, 1GB RAM, 80GB HD, 1.3 AMD, DVD player, card reader, 4 USB2 slots, and absolutely loaded it with gaming software for my stepson all for 18k Baht.

Like trackballs? Can't find one in CM? Computer Plaza, bottom floor, the shop all the way in the back on the left end and facing the door. They can order and have it the next day - the Logitech L34 Marble Trackball is 1450 Baht.
