Director of the Mine Action Center, Lt Gen Sittipol Nimnual , joined Commander of the US Directorate of Logistics Col Mora Hannigan in inspecting troops taking part in Cobra Gold 2019’s mine sweeping and disarmament exercise in Ubon Ratchathani. He presided over the Thai Army’s 1st Army Engineering Corps, 6th Army Engineering Corps and 6th Infantry Division to launch the operation. In the 1970s, ‘80s and ‘90s, insurgents and Thai government forces planted millions of landmines along Thailand’s borders with Cambodia, Laos, Malaysia and Myanmar. The Thai Army has been working for years trying to clear all the mines, so they do have some experience that this kind of work. It is a good learning opportunity for all the participants in Cobra Gold to learn from each other about how to remove land mines, while at the same time making parts of Thailand a safer place to live.

No need, no minds to remove anyway, but never mind. And if anyone in the military is found to have a mind of their own it's straight to the re-educational camp. It is also my understanding that in various areas the mines are placed from preventing smugglers..... I guess Thai Military or Border Security have enough man power to clear them, but actually not want to clear. May be I am wrong, but I lived in border areas for a while.

sanemax
Just now, Father Fintan Stack said: Considering the Americans were largely responsible for the rise of the Khmer Rouge and they along with the Thais propped them up for so long after they were removed by the Vietnamese, it's only fitting they should be removing the mines. Do explain how the USA was responsible for the rise of the Khymer Rouge

OzMan
I have trouble believing that the US bombing of Cambodia was a secret, although I am sure it happened. How could an open country like the US bomb the crap out of Cambodia and the press not report it. The press and others must have known what was going on but decided, for some unknown reason, not to publish the facts.

It would be difficult to imagine stuffing more clueless opinions into one relatively short post. A lot has been written on this subject.
